WANTAGE TOWN 2
v
THAME UTD 2
Don’t let Thame go out of the league at the end of the season. Off the
pitch, they are working so hard to retain their status, they deserve all the
support they can get. On the pitch, they never say die, and, on a day when the
heat sapped most players energy, they never stopped running. Wantage, rotating
their squad before Monday’s 1st leg of the Floodlit Cup final away to Shortwood
United, should still have been strong enough to compete with Thame United’s
simple approach to the game. In the first half, with Thame playing almost every
ball straight through the middle, Wantage elected to play themselves into the
game, attempting to play passing football from anywhere on the pitch. The flaw
in Wantage’s plan was that if you make mistakes attempting the beautiful
game, a hard working opposition will penalise you. The writing was on the wall
early in the game. In the 9th minute, the industrious Nathan Jack reacted quickest
and capitalised after Wantage’s defence missed several attempts to clear,
and with Wantage keeper Terry Burton off of his line, and as the central Wantage
defence watched in awe as the speculative forward ball bounced over their heads,
Jack simply lobbed the ball into an empty net. Wantage coolly reacted by again
reverting to a passing game from anywhere on the pitch. Their laudable ambition
was not matched by their accuracy, as time and time again they gave the ball
away. The catalogue of early first half errors was supplemented and penalised
again in the 31st minute, when Jack’s left footed shot from the edge of
the box, embarrassingly ‘bobbled’ over the diving Burton, to give
Thame a deserved 2 – 0 half-time lead.
The half-time talk from Manager Richie Bourne, coupled with the introduction
of substitutes Glynn Jones and Wayne Harbert, gave Wantage the spur to apply
more purpose to their game, which was rewarded when Tom Rowe got away from his
marker to fire the ball across the Thame goal to Glynn Jones, who drove the ball,
right footed, past the impressive Milan Barisic in the Thame goal. As the second
half progressed and Wantage stepped up their performance, Barisic made several
great saves, until the 83rd minute, when he was caught hesitating between his
line and coming forward to claim a lofted free kick into the box, leaving Wantage
Captain Gary Swann to nod on into the net for the Wantage equaliser.
To their credit, after their worst first half performance of the season, Wantage
did apply themselves and recovered to salvage a draw, against hard working opposition
who thoroughly deserved their point.
Wantage go to Shortwood United on Monday evening for the first leg of the Floodlit
Cup final knowing that if they start like they did against Thame today, they
will be severely punished.

WITNEY UTD 0
v
WANTAGE TOWN 3
Three quality first half goals combined with hard work, particularly from a midfield
five, who in the first half never stopped running, took the stuffing out of a
strangely out of sorts Witney United. WantageTowns midfield of Danny Allen, Liam
McCullough, Gavin Jones, Tom Austin was controlled and directed by evergreen
Assistant Manger Andy Wallbridge. They achieved their objective of neutralising
Witneys build-up play from midfield, and found time to feed the front running
pair of Gary Hartley and Danny Keen. Their pressure won a corner in the 12th
minute. Glynn Jones perfectly weighted cross was neatly nodded on by Captain
Gary Swann at the near post to Gary Hartley to head home at the far post. Uniteds
front runners huffed and puffed but were well contained by Wantages back three
of Glynn Jones, Edd Welch and Gary Swann. In the 40th minute, with the Witney
defence advancing well up towards the half-way line, Hartley cleverly sidestepped
a tackle and clipped a diagonal pass to Keen, whose turn and pace beat the attempted
offside trap. The experienced centre forward then beat the advancing Paul Tassell
with a smart low driven shot into the back of the Witney net. Witney immediately
responded, Wantages young reserve keeper Craig Payne saving well from Lee Keyes.
Paynes lofted clearance was allowed to bounce wide to the edge of the Witney
penalty area, where it was met by Danny Keen, who outran the Witney defence,
and, spotting Tassell off of his line, clipped a glorious lob over the advancing
keepers head and into the back of the Witney net.
In the second half, Wantage steeled themselves for an onslaught from the home
side which never came. The strangely out of sorts 5th placed team, never lived
up to their league position, whilst Wantage settled to contain Witney with a
confidence that belied their lowly league position. As the home side faded, Wantage
might have added to their total, as chances falling to Gavin Jones, Tom Austin
and Tom Rowe were not taken. At the other end Craig Payne was able to keep a
clean sheet with relative ease as Witney were unable to muster a second half
threat. A great result for Wantage, which will hopefully be the spur to enable
a late surge up the table to a position more representative of their quality,
on a good day. The result was also a triumph for the tactics of the management
team of Richie Bourne and Assistant Andy Wallbridge, who with the intensive programme
of games over the next few weeks in mind, rested Jon Stott, Wayne Harbert, Terry
Burton and Matt Malton.

ALMONDSBURY 2
v
WANTAGE TOWN 1
With Captain Gary Swann and Glynn
Jones each sitting out one match bans and regular keeper Terry Burton unavailable,
Wantage featured centre forward Gary Hartley at centre half, midfielder Danny
Allen at left back, and introduced Reserve keeper Craig Payne. On a fine surface,
in Summer conditions, Almondsbury moved the ball around with style and were rewarded
in the 26th minute when Jon Stott, under pressure, was deemed to have handled
the ball. Whilst Stott insisted that the ball had struck his chest, Referee Paul
Humphrey awarded the penalty which Steve Winter coolly struck past Payne. Wantages
never say die attitude came to the fore, and in the 41st minute, Danny Keen turned
on the edge of the area and rifled the ball past Andy King in the Almondsbury
goal. The second half began badly for Wantage. After 3 minutes, a weak cross
was allowed passage past the entire Wantage defence to give Almondsburys brightest
player Neil Rosslee, a simple tap-in at the far post. Wantage pressed for the
duration of the second half, particularly towards the end, Tom Austin going close
with a well struck shot and Andy Wallbridge drawing a brilliant save from King
in the Almondsbury goal, when the home keeper tipped Wallbridges strong goal
bound header over the bar. Wantages league form needs a boost with an intensive
period of games coming up. A series of defeats by the odd goal suggests that
with a little improvement a higher league position is achievable. This is also
indicated by their Cup form throughout the season, which culminated in their
Floodlit Cup semi-final, second leg midweek victory over Slimbridge. The two
legged Final is against Shortwood United. Wantage visit Shortwood for the first
leg on Monday, 16th April, and then host their Gloucestershire visitors for the
second leg on Thursday, 26th April.

HELLENIC LEAGUE FLOODLIT CUP - Semi Final (2nd Leg)
Thursday 5th April 2007
WANTAGE TOWN 1
v
SLIMBRIDGE 0
(Wantage win 2-1 after 1-1 1st leg at Slimbridge)
After working their socks off, and riding their luck, to
achieve a draw at Slimbridge in the first leg, Wantage secured a final place
through sheer hardwork
and one moment of superb finishing from wingback Glynn Jones. They now meet
Shortwood United, who dispatched Milton United 3 - 0 to win through to the
final 3 – 1
on aggregate.
The first half was full
of frantic action as both sides closed each other down, preventing
each
other
from
building attacking
moves. Strangely with all this action, neither Terry Burton
in the Wantage goal, or Ryan Chandler in the Slimbridge goal,
were
threatened or called into serious action. Wantage’s midfield
four of Gavin Jones, Andy Wallbridge, Chris Hogan, and Danny
Allen were exceptionally busy cancelling out the slick Slimbridge
midfield possession by constantly being in their faces. The second
half produced more penalty area action as both teams pushed forward.
In the 57th minute Danny Allen broke forward on the left wing
and whipped across a perfect pass for the onrushing Tom Rowe,
who drove narrowly over the Slimbridge bar. This move was a sign
of Wantage gaining a narrow advantage on the flanks as the Jones
brothers, Gavin on the right and Glynn on the left, were able
to get forward more often. Wantage also were gaining slightly
more possession with more ball to feet passing. This was rewarded
in the 66th minute when the ball broke to Glynn Jones on the
edge of the penalty area, who powered a full bodied left footed
volley past the helpless Chander in the Slimbridge goal. Wantage’s
confidence grew and for the next ten minutes Slimbridge had
to defend in depth. Slimbridge rallied in the last few minutes
of
the game, but the Wantage back four of Edd Welch, the redoubtable
Captain Gary Swann, Jon Stott, and Glynn Jones stood firm.
On
balance, a deserved win for Wantage, marked by stirring performances
by Player Manager Richie Bourne, who gave a master class in centre
forward ball holding, by Andy Wallbridge whose fitness and experience
put him in the centre of most of the action, and from Gavin Jones,
whose timely return to form, gave Wantage the edge over this
extremely talented Slimbridge team.

HIGHWORTH TOWN 0
The real heroes of this game were the 41 brave souls who watched two sides, whose
mutual respect for each other extended to sharing an inability to make the final
pass count. The chilling wind did little to influence the balance of play on
the pitch, but did get to all parts of most spectators. Many times throughout
this game, industrious midfield endeavour was wasted when the final pass failed
to found its target. Neither goalkeeper was called upon to be brilliant, although
both Ian Gill for Highworth and Terry Burton for Wantage, had plenty of practice
dealing with corners, which they both did with neat efficiency. A little tension
was created by one or two industrial challenges from each side, and more tension
was created as the game neared its end, when both sets of spectators realised
that the opposition might steal a goal as the play switched from end to end.
In the end, both sets of supporters were happy to share the spoils in a game
in which that touch of special skill was sadly missing.

BERKS & BUCKS
SENIOR TROPHY - SEMI FINAL
Tuesday 13th March 2007
SANDHURST TOWN 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN 0
It is quite surprising that a game that consisted of 90 minutes of frantic
action could produce so little goal mouth incident. Two extremely busy
sides continually
cancelled out each other’s actions in a game that more resembled pin-ball
than football. Wantage edged the possession in the first half with wingers Tom
Austin and Gavin Jones repeatedly pressurising the well-organised Sandhurst defence.
Wantage should have capitalised upon Jones’ industry particularly,
typified by a piece of 20th minute action which saw Jones dart by three
Sandhurst defenders,
only to see his pin-point cross narrowly missed by the onrushing forwards
Tom Rowe and Danny Keen. Keen also created problems for the Sandhurst defence
when
he ran at them, one rasping shot narrowly passing the wrong side of the
upright. Sandhurst started the second half with more purpose than Wantage,
who applied
self-inflicted pressure by conceding too many free kicks around their penalty
area. It was from one of these kicks that Aaron Roberts was allowed to
rise unchallenged to head cleanly past Paul Belcher in the Wantage goal
to put
Sandhurst into the
lead in the 63rd minute. Wantage responded with more endeavour and began
to put the home defence under pressure, Tom Rowe in particular going close
with
a header
that bounced agonisingly the wrong side of the post. The game frustratingly
came to an end for Wantage, as Sandhurst attempted to slow the game down
to protect
their lead. Despite their hard work, few clear-cut chances were created
by Wantage, whose laudable Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy run came to an
end
with the final
whistle.
Wantage’s disappointment at
the outcome of this winnable tie, is muted by the fact that they remain
in two
Cup competitions
and still have the challenge of achieving a respectable position in the
league as they regain the games that they are behind those around them
in what promises
to be a hectic end to the season.

WANTAGE TOWN 5
v
PEGASUS JUNIORS 0
The trip from Hereford to Wantage is a long way to come if you are going
to have a bad day. In the fifth minute of the game, a lively and youthful
Pegasus
midfield
and a casual and somnambulant Wantage defence, conspired to set up Pegasus’s
Mark Davies with only Wantage’s veteran keeper Paul Belcher to beat. Belcher
stood his ground and Davies sliced his opportunity wide. Seven minutes later,
against the run of play, one half of Wantage’s strike pair, Gary Hartley,
forced his way past Pegasus defender Steve Brotherwood and neatly laid the ball
into the path of the other Wantage striker Danny Keen, whose sharp drive gave
Bryn Watkins no chance in the Pegasus goal. Pegasus rallied, but Wantage with
wing backs Tom Austin and Gavin Jones drawn effectively back into defence, withstood
the Pegasus pressure. Hartley and Keen linked up again in the 28th minute, when
Keen finished sharply from Hartley’s neat pass, to put Wantage 2 – 0
up. Keen returned the favour in the 41st minute setting up Hartley, who not trusting
the run of the ball on the ‘bobbling’ pitch, flicked the ball up
before volleying past the helpless Watkins. The Pegasus goalkeeper knew he was
having a bad day when, with only a couple of minutes to go before half-time,
he pulled off two brilliant reflex saves only to see the ball fall to the feet
of Danny Keen, who completed his first half hat-trick with an unstoppable volley,
to send Wantage into the break with a 4 – 0 lead.
The Pegasus keeper continued to impress into the second half, pulling off
great saves from Hartley and Austin, and inspiring Pegasus as they pressured
the
Town’s
defence. In the 21st minute Wantage keeper Paul Belcher appeared to have been
beaten for the first time when Daniel Sobocinski’s shot dipped behind
Belcher and rebounded into play from the goal post structure. The referee
immediately looked to his better placed assistant who ruled that the ball
had not crossed
the line. Incensed Pegasus forward Anthony Robins pushed Referee M. Walker
whilst
remonstrating with him, and was immediately sent off. The half petered
out, marked only by two further brilliant saves by Watkins, and, after
clever
work and a
hard driven cross from Wantage midfielder Danny Allen, a well struck finish
past the luckless Watkins by his own defender Lewis Jones. If you are having
a bad
day, nothing goes your way.
A sound and mostly well controlled performance overall for Wantage,
and good preparation for their Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy
semi-final on Tuesday evening
at Sandhurst Town, but an emotional last game for their outstanding and
loyal midfield player Ellis Langford, who is due to leave Dalton
Barracks in the
next wave of troops heading for Afghanistan, a timely reminder
that……………….
football is only a game.

SHRIVENHAM 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN 0
The records will show that Shrivenham secured three points from this game,
but the paying and nonpaying spectators that turned out to be entertained
by the
high standard of football that both of these teams are more than capable
of delivering, must have left bemused by the poor performances from both
sides,
aided and abetted
by a Referee who at times was so far away from the action that he had to
consult in order to identify ‘who did it’. Wantage, with the
slope and wind, had the best of the first half, and should have taken at
least two of
the numerous
chances they created. Not to be outdone, Shrivenham in the second half
also conspired to miss several gilt-edge chances as an endless stream of
high
driven balls descended
into the Wantage penalty area. To their credit, each goalkeeper, Messrs.,
Simms for Shrivenham, and Burton for Wantage, each pulled off a brilliant
save, but
that praiseworthy action apart, the only other piece of football to deserve
credit was the spendidly worked Shrivenham goal, a couple of minutes before
half-time,
when Mark Peters headed home, unchallenged by a statuesque Wantage defence.
Perhaps more grounds should be open to the general public to wander in
and out as the
mood pleases. At least then, they might at least be able to take comfort
in not having to part with money in order to watch games like this. Mind
you,
the chap

HARROW HILL 0
v
WANTAGE TOWN 1
Harrows pace and zip from the start of this game more than
matched Wantage Town’s attempt to progress through patient possession and
although Wantage had the lion’s share of the ball, had it not been for
the alertness of veteran keeper Paul Belcher, and some wayward shooting by the
quick Harrow front pair of Eddy Weyman and Robert Adams, the outcome could have
been very different. But when you are at the base of the league games do not
always go your way, and if Wantage’s front pair of Gary Hartley and Danny
Keen had had their shooting boots on and they had taken their chances, the result
would have been more conclusive in Wantage’s
favour.
The single goal, coming immediately after the break, came from a free kick into
the Harrow box where Keen reacted first, driving in a fierce shot that Andy Reid
in the Harrow goal could only parry towards the post. Gary Hartley moved fast
and past two static Harrow defenders to prod the ball over the line. Immediately
after the goal Harrow counter attacked, Paul Belcher brilliantly foiling a Harrow
forward, whose passage through a square unreactive Wantage defence was disturbingly
easy.
So, Wantage took the points in the narrowest of victories in a match well handled
by the officials, whose positive attitude contributed to the considerable ebb
and flow of this entertaining game.

AFC WALLINGFORD 0
v
WANTAGE TOWN 3
The red kite that lazily soared over the Hithercroft Sports Park during
the first half of this game witnessed a dominant and solid Wantage performance,
played
on a heavy and tackey surface. Wantage’s forward pair, Gary Hartley
and Danny Keen, disturbed the Wallingford defence with their strong running
and
physical presence. The two strikers however, proved to be excellent foils
for the busy
Wantage midfield, where Wayne Harbert, Chris Hogan and Gavin Jones played
with credit. In the 29th minute, after good work by Hartley, Jones was
played in
for his first goal forcing the ball past John Shea in the Wallingford goal.
Jones
repeated the trick in the 38th minute, this time after clever build-up
work between Chris Hogan and Danny Keen. Wallingford were not without threat,
but the Wantage
defence stood firm, the experienced heads of Andy Wallbridge and Captain
Gary Swann, balanced by the reliability and keenness of Eddie Welch and
Jon
Stott.
Stott particularly, matched the pace of the fleet of foot Wallingford forwards,
and had an excellent game.
The second half was only four minutes old when Wallingford conceded a free kick
on the edge of their penalty area. Tom Austin clipped in a cross which was nodded
on by Gary Swann to Gary Hartley, who headed high into the Wallingford net. Wantage
cruised a little after the third goal, and tired defensive legs twice allowed
Wallingford to pass through, but Terry Burton in the Wantage goal was sharp and
prevented the home Club from profiting from one on one situations. Wantage also
had further chances, the industrious Danny Keen deserving more as he struck the
post when put through. Equally promising for the future, was the performance
of Chris Hogan, whose intelligent use of the ball from midfield, initiated many
of the Wantage attacks. Overall, an impressive performance from Wantage, building
upon their successful hard work in midweek against Pegasus in the Floodlit Cup,
which has earned them a two leg semi-final against Slimbridge.

v
PEGASUS JUNIORS 1
It was to everybody’s credit that this game happened. Credit to Pegasus
Juniors for making what transpired to be a traffic nightmare of a journey,
arriving late and getting out onto the rainsoaked pitch within ten minutes
of arrival
to start the game at 8.00pm. Credit to referee Mr.P.Smith from Barnet for
persisting with a game after two pre-match inspections of the sodden field,
and then turning
in a brilliant refereeing management display that allowed for the conditions
but kept the game on the move from start to finish, despite only having
one Assistant referee. Thanks to Glynn Austin for braving the elements
and taking
up the flag
at the last moment. Both sets of players deserve credit for providing entertainment
for the brave gathering of spectators with a game, the outcome of which
was not really settled until the 85th minute. With the wind and the driving
rain
behind
them, Pegasus always looked threatening in the first half, moving the ball
swiftly across the challenging surface. Their initial hard work was rewarded
after 18
minutes when Daniel Stack slid the ball past Paul Belcher in the Wantage
goal to give Pegasus an early lead. Belcher was called upon ten minutes
later to
brilliantly tip a rasping shot from the busy Stack over the bar. The first
half closed with
Wantage only making an occasional foray into the Pegasus half and the face
of the driving rain. Having started the game in less than perfect condition,
the
pitch surface did not deteriorate sufficiently to threaten the game, and
with the Referee making allowances and the players acting responsibly,
the second
half saw Wantage, now with the wind and rain behind them, driving forward
with more determination. The equaliser came from Player Manager Richie
Bourne whose
ancient legs and experienced head put him in the right place to be able
to prod the ball home from five yards after good build-up work from Gavin
Jones
and the
industrious Ellis Langford. But still the outcome of the game was in the
balance, even after Glynn Jones put Wantage into the lead with a fiercely
driven shot that Bryn Watkins in the Pegasus goal could only deflect on
into the net. Pegasus
battled on and had chances to level the score before Ellis Langford settled
the game five minutes from the end, tapping in from close-in, after good
interlinking involving again the in-form Gavin Jones. This result gives
Wantage Town their
second semi-final opportunity, along with the Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy,
but more importantly marks a return to form and endeavour after the poor
performance against neighbours Abingdon Town.

ABINGDON TOWN 3
Wantage turned in their poorest performance of the season against a young and
enthusiastic Abingdon Town side formed extensively from their Reserve team, whose
game, as a result of their inclusion in the First Team, was called off. From
the start they chased every ball and never allowed Wantage to settle. Wantage,
missing regulars Captain Gary Swann and keeper Terry Burton, started with three
at the back, but with their midfield largely ineffective, the back three found
themselves outnumbered as early as the 9th minute when Danny Thomas, unchallenged,
drilled a low shot past the rooted Purcell. Wantage heaved themselves back into
the game, with Danny Keen and Garry Hartley always looking to threaten a sometimes
fragile Abingdon defence. Keen should have converted a Tom Austin cross only
a few minutes after Abingdon scored, but the same combination were on hand to
equalise in the 25th minute when Keen neatly slotted home past Beames in the
Abingdon goal. Wantage briefly shaped to take control of the game but were rocked
in the 36th minute when again their static defending allowed Daryl Hutt to precisely
place the ball past Purcell again unchallenged from the edge of the box.
If their
performance in the first half had only been inspiring in patches, Wantage’s
performance in the second half was much more consistent. It was dire throughout.
To their credit, Abingdon chased every ball, and took control, and allowed Wantage
only brief unprofitable excursions into the Abingdon half. The game was sealed
in the 78th minute, when Mark Flanagan chipped Purcell to put the result at 3 – 1.
Overall a very disappointing display from Wantage, who need to pick themselves
up for next Tuesday’s League Cup game at Witney United. For Abingdon
Town, this game might have been the pick-me-up needed to turn their season
around and
distance themselves from the drop zone.

v
FAIRFORD TOWN 2
Wantage edged this keenly fought game with a solid display, slightly marred
by occasional lapses. The first lapse occurred after 15 minutes when Dave
Slattery cut easily through a square back four and slotted home past Terry
Burton in
the
Wantage goal. The ‘bobbling’ pitch seemed to influence the final
touch of both sides, but not Danny Keen, leading the line for Wantage. In the
28th minute, Keen controlled the ball five yards outside of the Fairford box,
and let fly a tremendous drive which rebounded from the crossbar to the edge
of the box. As all around wondered at such a feat, it was Keen who reacted first
and drove the ball back into the net. Wantage fortuitously increased their lead
a few minutes later when, under pressure from Keen, Tom Austin’s cross
struck Fairford fullback John Joyce’s heel and pinged into the net past
stranded Kyle Murdoch in the Fairford goal. Just before half-time, Wantage went
further ahead when Keen potted the home side into a 3–1 lead.
To
their credit Fairford’s players, who have stuck by their Club during a
very difficult time whilst the Club management work their way through severe
financial problems, may lack expenses but do not lack effort. Their hard work
was rewarded in the 52nd minute, when Neil Matthews turned unmarked in the midst
of a pool of static Wantage defenders and struck low and hard past Burton. Wantage
sensed the threat and with Wayne Harbert and Ellis Langford stamping their authority
on the midfield, Wantage pushed forward. In the 63rd minute, Langford drifted
forward to be well positioned to meet Keen’s cross with a delicate header
that placed the ball just past the reach of the Fairford keeper to give Wantage
a 4 – 2 lead. Fairford were not finished however and in the 65th minute,
they were awarded a controversial penalty following a clumsy collision involving
Wantage Captain Gary Swann. Dave Slattery acknowledged the dubiety of the decision
by neatly sending the spot kick past the outside of the post. The final quarter
of the game was played out with Wantage, on balance, having the edge. All three
Wantage substitutes, Gavin Jones, Tom Rowe and the newly signed Gary Hartley
from Abingdon Town, made an impact and added positively to the Wantage thrust,
giving Manager Richie Bourne some selection choice as his squad is strengthened,
as he prepares for his next game, ….at home to Abingdon Town.

WANTAGE TOWN 2
On an extremely well prepared pitch, it was the wind rather than the recent
heavy rain that influenced this game. Kidlington, kicking into the wind
in the first
half, settled into the game more quickly than Wantage, who looked lethargic
and out of touch for the first twenty minutes. Kidlington took the lead
after seven
minutes when, unchallenged, Ben Moses headed past Sean Purcell, on loan
from Didcot Town, in the Wantage goal. In the 23rd minute Wantage got into
the
game, Danny Keen forcing the ball home past Tucker in the Kidlington goal.
With the
wind behind them, Wantage took the game to their opponents, Gavin Jones
hitting the bar with a well struck effort, before, in the 43rd minute,
Danny Keen
also hit the bar with a long range shot. This time Tom Austin was on hand
to stroke
the rebound past the Kidlington keeper, to give Wantage a 2-1 lead at half-time.
The balance of play shifted in the second half with the youthfull, wind
assisted Kidlington side gaining the upper hand in terms of possession,
but being
unable to finish. Wantage defended well, Eddie Welch and Andy Wallbridge
bearing the
brunt of the Kidlington thrusts. However it was a defensive mix-up between
Wallbridge and keeper Purcell that gifted Kidlington their equalizer, Wallbridge
leaving
the ball to Purcell to clear, for the keeper to only succeed in driving
the ball against Wallbridge, the rebound falling neatly into the path of
Kidlington
striker
Jimmy Deabill, who slotted the ball into an empty net. Kidlington’s lack
of finishing sharpness meant that, although they had the lion’s share of
the possession in the last quarter of an hour, the game was played out to what
was, on balance, a fair result. Wantage were pleased with the way in which new
striker Danny Keen settled in, and with flankers Gavin Jones and Tom Austin both
in form, Wantage will hope to rectify their league position, exacerbated by the
loss of six points and seven goals as Chipping Norton’s record is
expunged from the league statistics, following their withdrawal from the
league.

MILTON UTD 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN 2
Wantage ran out winners in this hard fought Boxing Day local
derby. The game was well balanced, Milton Manager Gary Ackling,
who had watched Wantage Town’s
6 – 1 demolition of Bicester in their previous match, cleverly set out
to neutralise the forward threat of Ellis Langford and Tom Austin. Both players
were closely marked, the battle between colleagues in arms Langford and ex-Wantage
player Lee Davies, being a feature of the game. Both teams looked dangerous
going forward and it was odds on that a defensive mistake would lead to a goal.
This
happened in the 25th minute when the Wantage defence stood off Chris Hooper
and allowed him to pick his spot, driving low past Terry Burton in the Wantage
goal.
Wantage replied three minutes later when Tom Austin cut in from the right wing,
and although forced to the line to the right of the Milton goal, Austin was
able to precisely place a shot past Dave Tasker in the Milton goal, from the
narrowest
of angles.
The second half was equally competitive, Wantage looking dangerous
on the break, and with their back four of Wallbridge, Stott,
Swann and Glynn Jones effectively
coping with Milton’s forward thrusts. Wantage took the lead in the 65th
minute when after a corner, Milton failed to clear their line, and Ellis Langford
was on hand to force the ball over the line. Milton pressed without reward
for the last twenty minutes, Wantage keeper Terry Burton brilliantly tipping
a Darren
Howell effort round the post. But as Milton applied the pressure, their forwards
were not sharp enough on the day to find a response and Wantage added to their
Christmas presents, the scalp of their local rivals.
This was another resolute performance from Wantage Town, teamwork
and mutual support being their strongest feature. This game
also had the added bonus of
welcoming back Gavin Jones after a long lay off, Gavin looking very sharp when
he came on for the last part of the game.

HOUNSLOW BOROUGH 3
Wantage failed to raise their game until the last ten minutes. Both sides only
created few chances in the first half. For Wantage, Adam Giles and Paul Day
each went close but failed to hit the target, whereas Junior Hickson in the
37th minute
and Eddie Mee in the 44th minute both netted for Hounslow. Hickson’s soft
lob looked a comfortable gather for Terry Burton in the Wantage goal, but the
keeper was wrong footed by a wicked divot induced bounce and the ball rolled
over the line. Mee’s goal was a much more calculated affair, Mee being
put in by a clever pass from the wily old campaigner Michael Meaker. In the
second half Wantage began to gain more midfield possession and with ten minutes
to go
Paul Day pulled one back to inspire a late thrust from Wantage, which included
a drive from Gary Swann which hit the bar and bounced a foot over the line
only to be denied by the match officials. As Wantage pressed for the equalizer,
Hounslow
broke away with only a minute or so to go and grabbed a well worked third goal
when Artan Saliu nodded in a neatly lobbed cross.
Wantage’s league run of eight unbeaten games came to an end at the hands
of a more spirited performance

ARDLEY UTD 2
v
WANTAGE TOWN 3
Danny Allen had a hand in four of the five goals scored as a
battling and spirited Wantage Town overcame League leaders Ardley
United on their own patch. Wantage,
with reserve promotees Mark Nelson and Eddie Welch to the fore, matched Ardley
in midfield in the first half. Ardley, always looking dangerous on the break,
created several chances, but Terry Burton in the Wantage goal stood steadfast
and coped with ease. The second half saw Wantage kicking up the slope and facing
a pressured start to the half, Wantage conceded an early goal when Ryan Wiffen
netted, his shot being deflected off of Danny Allen’s knee, past the stranded
Burton. Wantage fought back and began to win the battle in midfield, Wayne Harbert
and Mark Nelson overcoming a lacklustre Ardley midfield. Danny Allen again deflected
the ball into the net in the 63rd minute, this time touching on Tom Austin’s
free kick past the Ardley keeper, to bring Wantage on to level terms.
Gary Swann and Jon Stott made their only mistake of the evening at the heart
of the Wantage defence when they allowed Luke Holden enough time to pick his
spot past Burton to regain the lead for Ardley. Whilst consistency in skill
level has not always been maintained this season, Wantage do not let their
heads drop
when going behind. With 10 minutes remaining, Wantage took the game to Ardley,
whose midfield strangely dissolved, and were rewarded with an equaliser from
Darren Quegan in the 80th minute, Danny Allen again involved. Allen again turned
provider when in the 82nd minute he crossed to the far post where Ellis Langford
was on hand to turn the ball past Steve Edwards in the Ardley goal. Ardley
threatened to come alive again in the last few minutes but were subdued by
a resolute Wantage
defence. This was a great performance from a small squad who were prepared
to work their nuts off, supporting each other, a tribute to the ‘team’ management
skills of Richie Bourne and Andy Wallbridge. A thoroughly deserved result.

SELSEY 3
v
WANTAGE TOWN 0
Can a team play well and still be at the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline? After
today’s performance it’s clear they can. As is well known I rarely
bother with a match report after a defeat but today’s performance merits
one so here goes.
Wantage came into this game with only 10 fit 1st teamers but
produced a creditable performance against an excellent Selsey
side. The1st half was a frenetic affair
as both teams fought hard to establish dominance. Ironically it was Wantage’s
best chance of the half which proved to be the springboard for Selsey’s
opener. Adam Giles created an excellent chance late on in the half however
the Selsey keeper dealt with the opportunity and Selsey broke with pace, a
missed
challenge on half way gave them the advantage, and Selsey made no mistake with
the finish to give them the lead at the half.
Within a minute of the restart Wantage were nearly back on level terms, Tom Austin
beat his man and shot past the keeper. However his shot found the inside of the
post and rolled tantalisingly along the goal line where it was eventually collected
by the Selsey keeper. Wantage were working hard to get back into the game however
a combination of stout defence from Selsey and the inability of the officials
to make the big decisions ensured that they were unable to do so. In the closing
minutes, as Wantage pushed forward, Selsey scored twice to give the scoreline
a somewhat flattering look.
A rain sodden surface certainly played it’s part but in no way justified
the inept performance by today’s officials who chose to ignore any contentious
decisions in front of a partisan home support.

SHRIVENHAM 1
Wantage extended their unbeaten run to 12 with a much-improved performance against
Shrivenham. In a goalless first half both teams worked hard to dominate their
opposition. In truth Shrivenham probably had the better of the opening half hour
although Wantage ended the half the stronger.
Wantage began the second half in positive mood however it was Shrivenham who
scored first. A break through the middle gave Shrivenham an opportunity but Paul
Belcher in the Wantage goal saved well. Unfortunately, the loose ball fell straight
to a Shrivenham player who made no mistake with the finish. Wantage worked hard
to get back into the game and were rewarded with an equaliser when a well-taken
free kick from Glynn Jones gave the Shrivenham keeper no chance.
Whilst this was not the result that Wantage would have hoped
for the performance
itself was much better than of late, Wantage’s passing was much improved,
as was their possession. However, Wantage will be disappointed by the limited
number of genuine opportunities which they were able to create.

CHIPPING NORTON TOWN 0
v
WANTAGE TOWN 2
With a number of regular first teamer’s either unavailable or injured,
the Wantage line up had a somewhat unusual look about it. Not least of which
was the presence in goal of Alex ‘I’ll play anywhere’ Lynch.
However, it was his man of the match performance that kept Wantage in the game
when things weren’t going well and gave them the opportunity to go on
and take all 3 points at Chipping Norton.
As at Bicester seven days previously, Wantage struggled to find
a rhythm or to pass the ball effectively. Chippy created the
majority of the first half chances
but Wantage worked doggedly to keep them out. Chippy’s best chance of the
game came after 32 minutes when a well taken free kick seemed destined for the
back of the net. However Lynch, diving to his left, got enough of the ball to
divert it wide of the goal. Wantage’s best chance of the half came after
40 minutes when a Glynn Jones free kick brought a good save from the Chippy
keeper.
The second half began and continued much as the first. Wantage
were struggling to establish any dominance or periods of possession
and Chipping Norton were,
in general, unable to take advantage. Then a bizarre goal gave Wantage the
lead, Adam Giles broke on the left, the keeper came out and dived
at his feet, but
failed to collect the ball, Giles was through but the angle was too tight,
Paul Day was in a great position however Giles’ cross went behind Day and it
looked like the chance was gone. Fortunately for Wantage, the Chipping Norton
defenders made a hash of clearing the ball and Tom Austin made no mistake, smashing
the ball home. Minutes later Day fashioned a great chance to increase the lead,
however, his shot was cleared off the line after beating the keeper. With time
running out, Wantage made sure of the 3 points. A corner on the left was cleared
as far as Danny Allen, who from fully 35 yards, hammered the ball goalwards,
and whilst the chippy keeper got a hand to the ball it wasn’t enough
to prevent the ball striking the back of the net.

BADSHOT LEA 3
Wantage stretched their unbeaten run to double figures but were made to fight
every inch of the way by an impressive Badshot Lea outfit. The first 15 minutes
were evenly contested with both sides working hard to gain an advantage. Then
Wantage began to take control, a number of good chances were created, however
it wasn’t until the 23 minute before Wantage were able to take the lead,
when after good work by Adam Giles on the left, whose cross were well met by
Paul Day to make it 1-0. On 30mins it was 2-0 when a Tom Austin cross was headed
home by Giles. 2 minutes later it was 3-0 when Austin did enough to disrupt
a Badshot Lea back pass and the ball fell to Giles who blasted home. Wantage
were
in complete control now but were unable to add to their total before half time.
I don’t know what was said in the Badshot Lea dressing
room at half time but it was a very different side which emerged
for the second half. Wantage started
the half slowly and Badshot Lea were able to apply sustained pressure to the
home team. After 15 minutes the pressure told after Wantage failed to clear
the ball and the Lea were back in the game as the ball was thundered
past Terry Burton
in the Wantage goal. 2 minutes later it was 3-2 and Wantage were in a dog fight.
Five minutes later the passion that had never been far below the surface in
this match bubbled to the top again and both sides were reduced
to 10 men. Giles restored
the two goal advantage when his shot took a slight deflection and looped over
the Lea keeper. However, the Lea were still pushing hard and seemed to adapt
much better to the loss of a player. Wantage went 3 at the back but Badshot
Lea were torturing the defence at every opportunity and the home
side were finding
it difficult to keep their shape at the back. With time running out the Lea
made it 4-3 and Wantage had to cling on for the last few minutes
to ensure their progress
into the next round.

The opening minutes were fiercely competed as both teams fought
hard to establish superiority. Wantage had a great chance after
just 5 minutes when the ball reached
Adam Giles at the back post, however, the ball was at an awkward height and
in the end the Wantage front man could only chest the ball wide
of the goal. Seconds
later a long distance effort from Wallingford had Terry Burton stretching to
tip the ball over. At this point the game was evenly poised, however on 16
minutes Wallingford were ahead when Wantage failed to clear a
cross from the right. The
ball travelled all the way across the goal before being neatly dispatched past
Burton in the Wantage goal. To their credit Wantage kept going and finished
the half strongly but without being able to break down a resolute
Wallingford defence.
Wantage began the 2nd half as they had finished the 1st and
after 8 mins they were level when a corner from the right was
well met by Giles to restore parity.
Wantage were well on top at this point and had several chances to take the
lead as Wallingford dug deep to stay in the game. After 25
minutes Wantage finally
scored a second via a corner from the left. Gary Swann rose like a salmon at

Wantage eased into the next round of the Floodlit Cup with a
comprehensive victory at home to Banbury Utd. Wantage took the

scoring after a good move involving both Paul Day and Tom Rowe. On 25 minutes
it was 2-0 after Banbury failed to clear a Tom Austin cross, Allen headed the
ball back across the box to leave Rowe with a simple tap in. On 30 minutes,
Day found space on the left side and his shot from the 18yard
line was good enough
to beat the goal keeper to make it 3-0. However, Banbury did not give up and
had their best chance just before the break, when a break down the right left
the Banbury player one on one with Terry Burton. Unfortunately for Banbury
the final effort was wide of the goal and the score remained
3-0.
Banbury began the second half much as they had ended the first
and within minutes of the restart they pulled a goal back.
As Wantage appealed for offside the Banbury
player kept his composure to fire past Burton in the Wantage goal to make it
3-1. However, within minutes Rowe restored the Wantage advantage with a superb
strike from 30 yards to make it 4-1. At this stage goals were coming thick

Wantage returned to winning ways in the league with a feast of
goals and a hat trick for Adam Giles against Thame United but
it was far from plain sailing.
Thame took an early lead after just 4 minutes. As Wantage appealed for offside,
Thame closed on goal and forced a good save from Terry Burton in the Wantage
goal. The ball ran out for the 1st of a succession of corners, and from the
2nd Burton’s punch was buried by Patrick Johnston to give Thame an early advantage.
Wantage seemed unable to establish any rhythm but they were still able to create
opportunities. After 24 minutes Wantage were awarded a penalty after a Gavin
Jones cross was adjudged to have been handled in the area. Unfortunately, Wayne
Harbert’s fiercely struck effort found the Thame cross bar and the
score remained 1-0. However, moments later, a fine ball from Ellis Langford,
once
again put Jones away on the right and this time his cross was met by Paul
Day who guided
the ball into the net to level the game at 1-1. After 35 minutes Wantage
made it 2-1 when Thame failed to clear a Day cross from the left and Adam
Giles
was on hand to score his 1st of the afternoon and the score remained thus
until half
time.
Wantage started the 2nd half much better than they had started
the match, after 15 minutes another break by Jones on the right,
and a quality cross, gave Giles
the chance to score his 2nd and put Wantage 3-1 ahead. Thame were not out
of it and it wasn’t long before they were able to pull
a goal back after a Thame striker was able to beat the last man
and finished well past Burton
to
make it 3-2. Wantage replied almost immediately after a fine run and shot
from substitute Tom Rowe to make it 4-2. However, Thame were
still working hard
and Burton made a number of very fine saves to maintain the advantage before
Wantage
were able to finally wrap the game up with 2 more goals in the closing minutes.
Giles got his hat trick after a well taken free kick by substitute Tom Austin

HENLEY TOWN 1
Wantage started brightly but it was Henley who created the early
opportunities by forcing the Wantage defence to concede a couple
of early corners. However,
Wantage were playing with more confidence than of late, and after 11 minutes
Paul Day ran away from the Henley defence and as he tried to round the goalkeeper
he was adjudged to have been fouled and the referee awarded a penalty. Day
stepped up to take the kick but it was saved by Jamie Thomas
diving low to his right
who also did well to keep out the follow up from Adam Giles. Fortunately
Day did not have long to dwell on his miss as moments later Henley
played a poor
back pass and Day found himself in a similar position with only the goalkeeper
to beat. This time he made no mistake and fired home to give Wantage the
lead. Wantage continued to dominant the 1st half, retaining possession
well and creating
the majority of chances however they were unable to add to their lead despite
a sustained period of pressure just before half time.
Wantage began the 2nd half as they had left off the first with
a fast break that once again seemed to have Henley on the back
foot. However, seconds later Henley
were level when Wantage were slow to close down a Henley player and he lobbed
the ball over Burton to level the scores. To their credit Wantage kept going
and stuck to the game plan, refusing to allow themselves to be diverted by
the equaliser. Within 7 minutes it paid off as Thomas was unable
to hold a firmly
struck effort from Giles and Day was on hand to bury the loose ball to restore
Wantage’s advantage. Wantage increased their lead to 3-1 after a superb
cross field ball from Glyn Jones to his brother Gavin which left him one on one
with the last defender. As Gavin went past his man it seemed almost inevitable
that the Henley player would have to try to stop him somehow and so it proved
as he tried to pull the Wantage winger back. Wayne Harbert stepped forward to
take the resulting penalty and thundered the ball home to give Wantage a margin
for error. Gavin Jones then made it 4-1 after another good pass found him one
on one with his marker. Again the Henley defender fouled the Wantage winger however
Jones was able to stay on his feet and the referee played a good advantage to
allow him to score. Wantage were in complete control now, a good ball from Ellis
Langford, picked out substitute Tom Austin who delivered a great cross to Tom
Rowe, on in place of Day, to make it 5-1. Rowe then completed the scoring after
Gavin Jones’ long-range shot rebounded from the bar and he was first
to react to the loose ball.
Overall, a good performance which will give the team confidence
ahead of their trip to Thame Utd on Saturday.

Wantage Town faced Almondsbury Town on a windy day at Alfredian Park. With the
wind at their backs Wantage kicked towards the clubhouse in the first half.
It was a cat and mouse affair with both sides testing each other out but it was
the visitors who drew first blood when Wantage were unable to deal with a corner
kick. The ball was kept alive in the penalty area and Mapstone was able to head
home from close range. Wantage pushed on but they appeared disjointed and just
before half time Terry Burton was left exposed with three attackers bearing down
on him and it was Bishop who added goal number two. (HT 0-2)
With the wind behind them, Almondsbury pressed home their advantage
keeping the home side penned in their own half. On 55 minutes
it was 3 – 0 when Macklin
scored from close range. It would have been worse for Wantage but Gavin Jones
managed to head a shot over the bar whilst standing on the goal line before
Burton was beaten by a long range effort from Rossley.
The game became very scrappy with both sides involved in scuffles and both managers
made sensible substitutions to avoid any major problems for the officials.
This was by far the worst Wantage Town performance of the season

WANTAGE TOWN 3
A superb first half display of attacking football was enough to give Wantage
the points at Bulpit Lane but Hungerford will probably be wondering what might
have happened had they taken what was arguably their best chance in the first
few moments of this game. From the kick off Wantage contrived to lose the ball
in midfield, Hungerford broke quickly down the right and a good pass found a
forward in space with only the keeper to beat. Fortunately, his effort was straight
at Burton and the Wantage goalie made sure the chance came to nothing.
From then on, for the first half at least, it was all Wantage. The first goal
came after 7 minutes, a long throw from Davies was punched away for a corner
which Glyn Jones took, the ball eventually fell to Giles who shot home just inside
the post to give Wantage the lead.
On 20 minutes a superb break down the left wing saw Wantage double their advantage.
Glyn Jones, always looking to get forward, started the move, deep in his own
half. Gavin Jones, played a nice combination with his brother, then Glyn broke
at pace before delivering a great cross which Day thundered home.
Wantage were rampant now and looked capable of scoring at will. However, minutes
later, the impetus was lost when Sam Belcher sustained a knee injury and had
to be replaced by Jon Stott. Hungerford were quick to capitalise and had a period
of sustained pressure when it looked likely that they would be able to get back
into the match. However, Wantage held firm and were able to add a third before
half time when a Lee Davies throw was superbly controlled by Day on the right
touchline. Day kept possession for what appeared to be an age before playing
a great pass for the onrushing Stott who burst into the box before squaring the
ball to Giles who made no mistake with the finish.
When Wantage returned to the field after the break it was clear some of the players
felt they had done enough to win the match already and the management team of
Bourne and Lloyd had to work hard to get them motivated again. A brave off the
line headed clearance by Davies from a thunderous driven shot finally seemed
to be the key that stirred Wantage back into life. However, the latter stages
of the match were to be a nervous time for the visitors after Hungerford pulled
a goal back following one of the most contentious offside decisions you will
probably ever see. But in the end Wantage emerged worthy winners after probably
their best team performance of the season so far.

so later, Langford also headed over from an Austin cross. But the pressure was
building, and after 13 minutes, from a Glynn Jones free kick wide on the left,
it was 3rd time lucky as Swann stooped to head the ball home to give Wantage
the lead.
To their credit Bicester responded and had their first chance minutes later
when a well-taken free kick was headed wide. Wantage were working hard but
were unable
to extend their lead and, after 30 minutes, from a free kick just inside
their half, a long, low ball into the Wantage box wasn’t dealt with
and the loose ball was stabbed home to make the game all square. Wantage
finished the
half
looking nervous and in the closing minutes of the half, Bicester had a great
chance to
take the lead but the shot went just wide of the
goal.
The second half was a scrappy affair, both sides had chances, the best falling
to Bicester when an attempted lob was superbly saved by Burton, who just
managed to get his fingertips to the ball and divert it onto the bar. The
game appeared
to be heading towards a frustrating draw when Wantage were awarded a free
kick in a good attacking position. Langford’s shot proved too hot to handle
for the Bicester keeper and the ball was spilled to the left of the goal, Belcher
was first to react and used his pace to retrieve the ball and fire it back across
the goal where a luckless Bicester player’s attempted clearance found
the back of the net via a ricochet off another defender.
After the disappointment of Their FA cup exit and recent league defeat to Slimbridge
this was an important win for Wantage but they were made to work very hard by
a determined Bicester team.
Team: Burton, Davies, Glyn Jones, Swann, Harbert, Allen, Langford, Austin,
Gavin Jones, Day, Boufferasare.
Subs: Giles, Stott, Belcher.

CUP - PRELIMINARY ROUND

HASSOCKS 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN 0
Despite the hospitality of this well organised Sussex Club, Wantage never
settled into this game. After a four hour journey which included an extended
hold-up
on the M25, Wantage struggled to put together any cohesive football. The
game was evenly balanced in the first half, each side spurning chances. In
the 11th
minute Mark Sheriff lobbed Terry Burton, only to see the ball bounce back
into the Wantage keeper’s arms from the crossbar. At the other end Glyn Jones,
having been put through by his brother Gavin, drew a fine save from Joel Harding
in the Hassocks goal. Frederick Baffourasare shot wide from close in after good
build up work from Adam Giles and Tom Austin. Richard Thomas for the home side
fired over when left unchallenged in the box. Referee Mr. C. Hicks surprised
home and away supporters by denying Wantage a penalty when Gavin Jones was clipped
in the box. As the half time whistle approached Wantage’s best move
of the half ended with the busy Gavin Jones forcing a good save from the
Hassocks
keeper.
Five minutes into the second half Hassocks took the lead when
Anthony Hibbert struck a free kick from the edge of the box
neatly past Burton in the Wantage
goal. As the half progressed, Wantage began to press but could not turn opportunities
into goals. Substitute Danny Allen, replacing Tom Austin, chipped the keeper
and the bar, from one of a series of good crosses from right full back Lee
Davies, and Frederick Baffourasare should have scored when
put through as the game’s
end approached.
Overall for Wantage, the game produced one or two positive performances. Gary
Swann and Jon Stott looked safe in defence, but in midfield Ellis Langford and
Wayne Harbert never got going, and were easily swamped by their Sussex opposite
numbers. After more homely hospitality from Hassocks, Wantage began their long
journey home knowing that a marginally better performance could have secured
this F.A. Cup tie.
Team: T Burton, L Davies, J Stott, G Swann, Glyn Jones,
W Harbert, T Austin, E Langford, F Baffourasare, A Giles, Gavin
Jones.
Subs:
P Day, D Allen, T Rowe, R Bourne.

HIGHWORTH TOWN 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN 1
Wantage travelled to Highworth full of confidence on the back of a convincing
opening day performance against Chipping Norton. Richie Bourne made a couple
of changes to the side that started that match. Danny Allen moved out to
the right of midfield in place of the unavailable Tom Austin with Wayne Harbert
replacing Danny in the centre. Paul Day and Adam Giles were chosen to lead
the attack with
Freddie Baffourasare moving to the bench (or so it was thought). From the
kick
off it was clear that this would be a very different game to Saturdays. Wantage
struggled to settle as Highworth sought to impose themselves on the game.
With early physical challenges going unpunished, the referee created a tone
that
would continue throughout the game. Highworth had the better of the early
exchanges, their first real chance coming after 7 minutes when a needlessly
conceded corner
was headed just wide of the Wantage goal. A few minutes later a Highworth
shot was comfortably saved by Terry Burton. However, it wasn’t long
before Wantage got their first, and arguably best, chance when a superb through
ball
from Allen
found Giles in space and with only the goalkeeper to beat. However, his shot
cleared not only the goalkeeper but the bar as well and the score remained
0-0. Both sides battled hard throughout the rest of the half with neither
side gaining
a clear advantage. Wantage finished the half stronger and had a penalty appeal
waived away (as were most Highworth tackles) by the referee just before half
time.
Wantage began the second half brightly, and ironically just when
it was beginning
to look as if the Wantage front line couldn’t buy the award of a free
kick, Adam Giles was judged to have been fouled just outside the area. Considering
what had been allowed to go on before the award was harsh to say the least!
Glynn
Jones took responsibility and rifled the ball home to make it 1-0. Wantage
immediately sought to impose themselves on the game and created a number
of other chances.
Then it all went wrong! Wantage tried to replace the tiring Danny
Allen with Freddie Baffourasare only to discover that Freddie
had been left off the team
sheet and therefore was unable to come on. A sustained period of Highworth
pressure followed as did the seemingly inevitable equaliser.
On 73 minutes, after Highworth
were awarded a free kick inside the Wantage half which was not effectively
cleared, and the goal was finally scored by Matty Saye. The remainder
of the match was
a chaotic affair with both sides having chances yet neither side being able
to deliver the coup de grace. Oh and somewhere in amongst all
that a Highworth player
received a straight red for daring to return to the field after treatment
without the referee’s permission!
Wantage will be disappointed by this result but there were enough
positives to be able to travel to Hassocks in confident mood
for Saturday’s encounter
in the F.A cup.
Team: Burton,
Davies, Glyn Jones, Swann, Stott, Harbert, Allen, Langford, Gavin
Jones, Day, Giles.
Subs: Bourne, Ingram, (Boufferasare).

WANTAGE TOWN 5
v
CHIPPING NORTON TOWN 0
Paul Day celebrated the recent addition to his family with a hat trick and a
man of the match performance against Chipping Norton Town at Alfredian park.
With Adam Giles returning to the club late on Thursday night, there was much
speculation about who would start the match up front. In the end Richie Bourne
decided to start with the pairing of Paul Day and Freddie Baffourasare which
had started the majority of the pre season games and Dayo wasted no time in staking
his claim for a regular starting place.
Wantage started the game brightly and the majority of the early exchanges were
taking place within the Chipping Norton half. With 10 minutes gone, a good ball
found Day in space but a long way from the Chipping Norton goal. With Baffourasare
running strongly in support, Day closed on the goal and calmly shot wide of Harris
to give Wantage the lead.
After 17minutes, an Ellis Langford shot
hits the bar after a superb finger tip save by Harris.
On 25 minutes a
defensive lapse nearly lets Chipping Norton back into the game
but Terry Burton saved confidently.
On 32 minutes a period of sustained pressure sees Day hits the right hand post
with a smart shot and 7 minutes later Wantage increased their lead as a long
throw from Lee Davies was headed on for Day to score his second with a crisp
shot.
Wantage continued to press strongly for the remainder of the half but were unable
to add to their score.
Half time 2-0
Within 5 minutes of the restart Day completed his hat trick after the Chipping
Norton defence failed to clear a well taken Wantage corner.
On 73 minutes, Adam Giles, on in place of Tom Austin, celebrated his return to
the club, with a smart shot past Harris to make it 4-0, and barely 4 minutes
later Baffourasare completed the scoring to give Wantage a convincing win.
Chipping Norton will probably be disappointed by their performance in this game
but Wantage can be justifiably proud of a solid team performance capped by an
excellent individual display from Paul Day which gave Wantage their first opening
day win for some years.
A mention should also go to Mr Nieminski and his assistants who also produced
fine performances.
Team: Burton, Davies, Swann, Stott, Glyn Jones, Gavin
Jones, Langford, Allen, Austin, Day, Baffourasare.
Subs: Giles, Ingram, Bourne.
