WANTAGE TOWN RES 5
v
WITNEY UTD RES 3
Wantage Town Reserves faced runners up Witney Utd Reserves in the final game
of the season. With nothing resting on the result it could have been a boring
match but nothing could be further from the truth.
Wantage were soon into their stride and Tom North, playing at left back, sent
in a cross over the visitors defence to Tom Larman who unleashed a half volley
into the roof of the net, with just 2 minutes on the clock. Then Huw Evans kicked
the ball the length of the pitch, releasing Sam Belcher who was denied a certain
goal with a magnificent last ditch tackle. Wantage were playing superb football,
Larman squared a ball to Mark Rawlins who fired just over the bar then North
crossed to Belcher and his shot was going wide until Tom Srawley moved in and
crashed in number two from a narrow angle. Witney were still in the game playing
open passing football and it was no surprise when they opened up the Town defence
to make it 2-1. The football from both sides was neat and tidy, Wantage earned
a corner on the right, Shane McGowran sent in a dangerous cross which was punched
clear by the keeper, the ball fell to Tom Austin who drilled the ball back through
a crowd of players to make it 3-1 with his first goal of the season. Witney replied
immediately from the kick off to make the score 3-2 with just 30 minutes gone.
Larman went close again, Belcher sent a fierce drive crashing against the bar,
then Austin, Srawley and Larman combined but the resulting shot went narrowly
wide of the target. It was end to end stuff, but it was Wantage who scored again
when Belcher turned and hit a shot from 25yard which went in of a post. With
half time approaching Tom Srawley cut in from the right and crossed for Larman
to crash in number 5.
The second half may not have had the goals but the football was just as entertaining.
Simon Hicks replaced Austin before Witney scored their third goal. A perfect
cross from the right cleared the Town defence and the centre forward, Frizzell
controlled well before finding the net. Larman crossed for Belcher and Hicks
to attack, the latter squeezing the ball narrowly wide. North fired another stinging
drive wide before Alex Edmunds replaced McGowran.
John Srawley and Stuart Morrison settled down, linking with Ross Tyler as Wantage
set about playing out the remaining minutes. Evans was called upon to make a
spectacular double handed save from a goal bound header before Paul Wilkins took
over from Larman for the final minutes as Towns season grew to a close.
This was probably the most entertaining match of the season for Wantage Town
reserves. Witney Utd made it a superb afternoon, themselves playing attractive
passing football. The inter play between the Town youngsters was a joy to watch
and Wantage thoroughly deserved their 11th consecutive League victory of the
season.
Well done again Wantage Town, Res Division Two (West) League Champions.
Team: H Evans, M Rawlins, T Austin, J Srawley, S McGowran,

THE
HUNGERFORD CUP - SEMI FINAL
Thursday 29th April 2004
HUNGERFORD TOWN 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN 0
Wantage Town had decided to field a young
side in this fixture early in the week due to League commitments. This was no
disrespect to the competition organisers but an opportunity for the players from
the Reserve team to show their skills and ability at another level, assisted
by First teamers Lee Newport, Glyn and Gavin Jones.
After Newport had chipped narrowly over the crossbar in the early stages, Hungerford
used their experience to push Wantage back with a more direct approach. The set
piece delivery was a constant threat and the long throw tactic particularly dangerous.
Wantage held out until the 18th minute when a throw in to the near post was flicked
on and the second runner was able to head into the net from close range. Huw
Evans was in splendid form making a string of saves as Hungerford threatened.
Although under pressure, Wantage still showed their style of passing football
and kept the score to 1-0 at the interval.
The second half had Wantage attacking down the slope and the youngsters began
to show their strengths. Sam Belcher replaced Hicks in a bid to add some pace
to the attack and change to a wide attacking style. Shane McGowran replaced Newport
as Wantage began to dominate possession without that killer touch in front of
goal. Both side survived goalmouth incidents, Wantage having a penalty claim
turned down as the home side struggled to scramble the ball to safety, and Evans
was brave and agile in keeping the home forwards out.
When the final whistle blew Hungerford Town had progressed to the Cup Final but
Wantage Town had won many friends with a fine battling display.
Team: H Evans, M Rawlins, Glyn
Jones, J Srawley, A Lynch, Gavin Jones, T Austin, S Hicks, L Newport, T North,
T Srawley,
Subs: S Belcher, S McGowran, P Wilkins.

OLD WOODSTOCK RES 0
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 2
Wantage Town Reserves travelled to Old Woodstock Town for a tough mid-week encounter.
Although Alex Edmunds was unavailable the squad welcomed back Tom Larman, Shane
McGowran, Sam Belcher and Tom North who had recovered from his injury problem.
From the kick off Old Woodstock showed their intent with a late challenge on
Stuart Morrison but the youngsters of Wantage kept their cool and began to knock
the ball around, playing slick passing football. Wantage won a corner on the
left which was taken by Tom Austin, the ball bypassed the tall Woodstock defenders
and fell invitingly to Morrison who hooked the ball over the keeper to give Wantage
an early lead. Wantage passed the ball around well, taking a few knocks but were
not getting too much protection from the official. North crossed from the right
and McGowran did well to get a shot away but it went wide Then from another Austin
corner Alex Lynch rose well but sent his header over the crossbar. All Woodstock
could offer was a couple of long range efforts wide of the target due to a well
organised Wantage defence. Lynch was dominant in the air, winning everything
on the half way line. His headers keeping the home defence under pressure from
the hard working Simon Hicks and Larman up front. Tom Srawley and North were
working well together in the centre of the pitch, using the ball simply bringing
McGowran and Austin in to the game down the wide positions. Both Mark Rawlins
and Morrison were pushing on to support the attacking play whilst John Srawley
kept the home attackers in check.
Wantage were content to play deeper in the second half, shutting down the Woodstock
midfield, restricting the service to the front men. Hicks and Larman were working
hard for the team, tackling back and upsetting the defenders. Huw Evans, although
almost a spectator, was at his best when on 14 minutes of the second half he
flung himself to his left to keep out a sliced Morrison clearance, turning the
ball out for a corner kick. Larman and a defender were both cautioned after kicking
out at each other after a long running incident. Larman then took his own revenge
by latching on to a through ball from Rawlins, he out-paced a defender, rounded
the keeper and rolled the ball into an empty net. Woodstock pushed on their substitutes
in a bid to get back into the game but the Wantage team were solid throughout.
Belcher replaced McGowran for the final 5 minutes as Wantage prevented any slip
ups and ran out comfortable winners.
This was yet another solid performance
from Wantage Town Reserves. The young skilful footballers overcame
a strong intimidating side, lacking in the skills shown by
Wantage.
Again everyone involved in this game must be happy with their own performance,
especially Alex Lynch and Simon Hicks. Lynchy was magnificent in the air and
Hicksy ran himself into the ground, acting as a perfect partner to Larman on
a night where strength was required as well as skill.
Well done again.
Team: H Evans, M Rawlins, J Srawley, A Lynch, S Morrison, T Austin,
T Srawley, T Larman, S Hicks, T North, S McGowran.
Subs: S Belcher, W Griffin, J James.

WANTAGE TOWN RES 2
v
HOOK NORTON RES 0
Wantage Town Reserves played host to Hook Norton Reserves on
a hard uneven pitch due to the recent lack of rain. Hook Norton
were a good side the teams met last
month in unbelievably windy conditions and the 5-1 score line was built up
in a tremendous opening 45 minutes by Wantage Town with the wind
at their backs.
This time a slight wind was blowing down the pitch and Town were
kicking into it. The game was very scrappy, not much football was
possible in the centre of
the pitch where Tom Srawley and Warren Griffin battled against three Hook Norton
players. To combat the extra man Mark Rawlins push into the centre to help
out. Both sides threatened but the defences were on top, neither
side could get the
ball down and play football. After 35 minutes the stalemate was broken when
Alex Lynch headed goal wards from the edge of the penalty area.
The visiting keeper
appeared to have the ball covered but the ball slipped out of his grasp and
dropped over his shoulder behind the goal line before Alex Edmunds
followed up to make
sure the goal stood. Then just before half time the Town back four was penetrated
but Huw Evans was quick off his line to save the goal bound effort.
The second half began, as the first very scrappy, with the ball
in the air too often. Paul Wilkins and Edmunds were playing on
the last defender and Wantage
began to take control, showing their Championship qualities. Austin started
getting down the right wing, crossing the ball into dangerous areas
and the back four
of John Srawley, Lynch, Rawlins and Stuart Morrison began playing a more controlled
passing game. Simon Hicks was working well up and down the left flank. Wilkins
crossed from the left and Austin saw his well struck shot tipped over the bar
by the keeper. With 15 minutes remaining Wantage increased their lead. Wilkins
released Austin down the right, although a defender was first to the ball Austin
charged down the clearance and the ball ran to Tom Srawley who unselfishly
squared the ball to the unmarked Edmunds who rifled the ball into
the net for his second
goal in two games. Tom North replaced the tiring Griffin, who had done very
well in his first start of the season. It was only in the final
five minutes that
Hook Norton showed how dangerous they could be. Evans made a fine save down
to his left, then he made two further saves with his hands and
feet as he fought
to earn his 7th clean sheet of the season.
This was another battling performance.
With a reduced playing staff, due to various reasons the team spirit carried
the side to their 9th consecutive league victory.
Team: H Evans, M Rawlins, S Hicks, J Srawley, A Lynch,
S Morrison, T Austin, T Srawley, A Edmunds, P Wilkins, W Griffin.
Subs: T North.

MIDDLE BARTON RES 0
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 3
Wantage Town Reserves travelled to Middle Barton without Adie Tinsley, Ross Tyler
and Tom Larman but with a strong squad of players the expectations were still
high. Simon Hicks and Alex Edmunds were back in the starting eleven whilst Paul
Wilkins and Jon James were on the bench.
Wantage got off to the best possible start when Tom North scored after only 3
minutes. His miss hit free kick skipped along the ground and slipped through
the hands and legs of keeper Caton. Then after only 8 minutes North had to leave
the field with a groin strain being replaced by Wilkins. Wantage were on top,
Alex Lynch headed into the side netting when well positioned and Tom Srawley
set up Hicks with a one on one situation but the keeper saved well at his feet.
Barton looked sharp up front, causing John Srawley and Lynch a few problems but
with Mark Rawlins and Stuart Morrison making up a strong back four their chances
were limited. Lynch went close with another header from a Tom Austin corner and
Edmunds tested the keeper from long range. Wilkins had two opportunities to increase
the lead but both were off target. On 40 minutes Wantage did increase their lead,
Rawlins and Edmunds exchanged passes and Edmunds struck a vicious shot which
took a slight deflection as it flew past Caton into the net. As the half drew
to a close Huw Evans was left exposed but he did enough forcing the forward to
shoot wide of the goal.
With the wind at their backs the home side were expected to pressure town in
the second half but it was Wantage who struck first. With just 4 second half
minutes on the clock, Rawlins crossed from deep and Wilkins rose and powered
a header into the top corner of the goal. Jon James replaced Sam Belcher, who
was feeling unwell, and Wantage reshuffled the team. The back four soaked up
the pressure and played the ball out of defence. Hicks, playing on the left of
midfield, was tracking back well and causing the home side problems when he pushed
forward. Austin and James were busy on the right crossing and shooting well,
whilst Tom Srawley and Edmunds battled superbly in the centre of the pitch. Evans
controlled his area and his presence was enough to prevent the home side a goal
even when they looked certain to score. Wilkins, who played more minutes in this
game than he had since the start of the season, kept battling to the end.
This squad never fails to amaze me. When
the going gets tough this bunch get going. Hicks and Edmunds have been awaiting
their opportunities to start, both are forwards but when called upon to play
out of position, they just do it! Everyone involved in this game must be happy
with their own performance and be satisfied with a sound team effort. Well done
again.
Team: H Evans, M Rawlins, J Srawley,
A Lynch, S Morrison, T Austin, T Srawley, A Edmunds, S Belcher, S Hicks, T North.

WANTAGE TOWN RES 5
v
MIDDLE BARTON RES 1
This was the first of two games over the Easter holiday period where Wantage,
needing 5 points could seal the Reserve Division 2 West League Championship.
Huw Evans was fit to return in goal and Ross Tyler replaced the injured Chris
Whitworth.
Wantage Town started well and after 7 minutes Tom North fed Adie Tinsley down
the left, he turned and crossed for Sam Belcher to head the ball home for 1-
0. Town kept up the pressure pinning the visitors in their own half. When a corner
was partially cleared the ball fell to Tinsley 20 yards out and he hit a fierce
drive through a crowded area into the net to make it 2- 0. The Barton defence
were under constant pressure conceding free kicks around the penalty area. North
hit a tremendous shot which was well saved by the visiting keeper but when given
a second attempt from a similar position North drove the ball into the net off
the underside of the crossbar. Wantage were knocking the ball around well, Belcher
went close with a first time effort and Ross Tyler saw a free kick squeeze marginally
wide of the far post. The Wantage defence of keeper Evans, Mark Rawlins, John
Srawley, Alex Lynch and Stuart Morrison were hardly troubled by the visiting
attack.
The second half was only minutes old when Tom Austin crossed from
the right and Belcher headed narrowly wide. On the hour Simon Hicks
replaced Lynch and he had
an early chance to add to his seasons tally but he shot over. Then Tom Larman
beat his marker only for the defender to handle the ball on the edge of the
area resulting in a free kick. Tinsley place the ball and then
shot around the wall
into the net to make it 4–0. At this point Alex Edmunds replaced the
lively Larman. Tinsley went close again producing a fine save low down by the
keeper,
before he ran into the penalty area before being upended and the referee Mr
Matthews pointed to the spot. Tinsley picked himself up and scored to complete
his hat-trick
from the penalty spot Wantage continued to push on but it was Barton who scored
a consolation goal to make the final score 5-1.
This was a comfortable victory for the confident Town side. Once again everyone
played their part in securing a win with good passing, attacking football.

WANTAGE TOWN RES 2
v
CHIPPING NORTON TOWN RES 0
Wantage Town reserves were unchanged for their second game in three days. After
Saturdays results a victory over Chipping Norton would confirm them as Reserve
Division Two League Champions.
Wantage began well, Tom North hit a free kick low and hard which the visiting
keeper parried away for a corner. Then Stuart Morrison played the ball over the
defence for Sam Belcher to run through but his shot went narrowly wide of the
goal. North was causing the visitors problems down the left and he crossed well
for Tom Larman to head inches wide of the target. The game then became very scrappy
as Chippy worked their way into the game. Wantage managed only one more attempt
on target in the half when Adie Tinsley cut in from the right and saw his drive
kicked around the post by the keeper.
Wantage came out for the second half with a greater desire to take all three
points. Alex Lynch rose well to head a corner straight at the keeper then on
8 minutes Larman headed on to strike partner Belcher who found the net from 12
yards. Ross Tyler then headed a North corner narrowly wide as Wantage pressed
for a second goal. Chippy were not finished and Mark Rawlins did well tracking
back and making a timely tackle whilst John Srawley kept the visiting forwards
in check. Wantage were playing far better football and Larman hit a stinging
drive which was tipped over the bar. Then Wantage scored the all important second
goal. A free kick was awarded wide on the right; Tinsley hit the ball low into
the six yard box, the keeper appeared to have the ball covered but it slipped
through his hands and legs into the net for 2-0. Simon Hicks and Alex Edmunds
replaced Austin and North as Wantage introduced fresh legs. Huw Evans was alert
to two through balls, racing from his line to make two important saves ensuring
a clean sheet. With 10 minutes remaining Tom Srawley made his return to the team,
replacing Tom Larman
as Wantage played out the game for the three points.
This may not have been a convincing score line but over the last six weeks this
team have proved themselves as worthy league leaders winning at Ardley, Hook
Norton, Easington, Almondsbury and at home to Middle Barton.

ALMONDSBURY TOWN RES 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 3
Wantage Town Reserves travelled to Bristol
with a fixture against high flying Almondsbury Town awaiting them. This was their
third away game in a row knowing a victory was vital to keep the chasing pack
at bay. The pitch and facilities were excellent, setting both sides in the right
frame of mind for the game ahead.
The game began with both sides playing well Wantage looking the more composed.
On 12 minutes Sam Belcher and Tom Larman combined well allowing Larman to break
clear shooting just over the bar. Tom North, playing on the left of midfield,
was teasing his marker using both Larman and Stuart Morrison well in his play.
On 20 minutes North forced a corner on the left, Larman took an in swinging kick
and the ball crept into the net at the near post off a defenders head. The midfield
battle was fierce at times; Adie Tinsley taking some rough treatment before Mark
Rawlins was involved in an incident resulting in a caution to both him and his
opponent. From the free kick, deep in their own half, the ball found the winger
who crossed the ball, deep beyond the far post and the danger seemed to have
past. The ball was retrieved on the right and Morrison beaten and the low shot
crept over the line off Kevin Wilkins hand. Wantage responded well but the second
goal was not forthcoming.
After the break Wantage turned on the style. Morrison won a header guiding the
ball to Tinsley who slipped the ball through to Larman who made no mistake in
beating Pope in the Almondsbury goal. As in the first half the home side almost
replied immediately when a looping header bounced off the top of the crossbar
to safety. John Srawley and Alex Lynch were dominant at the heart of the defence
whilst captain, Chris Whitworth controlled the middle of the pitch, playing the
ball simply but effectively and Tom Austin kept the lively Maloney in check.
With 20 minutes remaining Wantage increased their lead, again it was Morrison
who powered a headed clearance over the home defence and Belcher reacted first,
racing clear he lifted the ball over Pope into the net to make the score 3-1.
Almondsbury managed one further attack but Wilkins was equal to the low shot
down to his left. Wantage kept the pressure on, with 20 minutes remaining Simon
Hicks and Alex Edmunds replacing Belcher and Larman both of whom had opportunities
to increase the lead. Edmunds was foiled by a fine save by Pope and Hicks curled
a shot around the keeper but beyond the far post. Then veteran Paul Wilkins replaced
the impressive North for the final minutes as Wantage cruised to a comfortable
victory.
This was another terrific performance.
As the pressure has mounted over the last few games the team has responded in
the best possible way. With changes in personnel the team has played with the
same flair and imagination. It has been great to see the young players respond
to the guidance offered by Adie Tinsley, Chris Whitworth and Tom Larman.
Team: K Wilkins, M Rawlins, T North,
J Srawley, A Lynch, S Morrison, T Austin, A Tinsley, T Larman, S Belcher, C Whitworth.

EASINGTON SPORTS RES 0
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 1
Wantage Town Reserves travelled
to second placed Easington Sports for the top of the table clash with a shortage
of players but a strong fighting spirit. Stuart Morrison was available, Simon
Hicks and Mark Rawlins returned to the starting line up. New signing Kevin Wilkins
was making his debut in goal, as Huw Evans recovered from his recent operation
and John Srawley, Warren Griffin and Paul Wilkins were on the bench.
In a close first half neither side gave an inch and chances were limited. Easington
missed an opportunity when Dixie’s’ shot was easily gathered by Wilkins.
Wantage squandered a free kick after McGowran was tripped after a tricky run
and Sam Belcher was unlucky when he worked his way into the penalty area but
the ball trapped under his feet as he prepared to shoot.
The second half began as the first ended with both sides battling for every ball.
Tom North, Chris Whitworth, Simon Hicks and Tom Austin were out numbered in mid
field so McGowran moved in to tighten things up, leaving Morrison, Rawlins and
Alex Lynch at the back. Tom Larman and Belcher began to put the home defence
under more pressure with their pace and movement. On 65 minutes Hicks won the
ball on the left and carried the ball into the Easington half before releasing
Larman. As O’Connor the home keeper raced from his goal Larman lifted the
ball over his head and into the net. Wantage were playing good football getting
the ball forward early.
In a brief spell McGowran went close twice, firstly his shot was blocked and
then he headed over the crossbar from close range. Easington upped their game
sending more men forward, Wilkins made a good save with his feet when he had
to come out of his area to make the challenge. The whole team then got behind
the ball and defended well reducing the home side to long range shots which failed
to test Wilkins.
This was a crucial game for Wantage in their title challenge. A clean sheet ensured
at least one point and deny Easington two; therefore the victory was a bonus.
The team played well for 90 minutes, defending in numbers, with North and Whitworth
outstanding in the centre of midfield. The forwards were lively and always looked
capable of nicking a goal to win the game.
Team: K Wilkins, M Rawlins, S McGowran,
S Morrison, A Lynch, T North, T Austin, S Hicks, T Larman, S Belcher, C Whitworth.

HOOK NORTON RES 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 5
On a day when many games were called off due to the gusty winds, Wantage
travelled to Hook Norton strengthened by the inclusion of Pete Broad and Gavin
Jones.
The strong wind was blowing across the pitch, down the slope towards the clubhouse
and the home side found it difficult to break out of their own half. Wantage
pushed up, containing Hooky in their own half, with Ross Tyler and Tom North
dominating the central area. The strike partnership of Sam Belcher and Tom Larman
combined well on 8 minutes with Belcher heading the ball through to Larman who
cleverly beat Jacobs in the Hook Norton goal. Larman almost made it 2 - 0 with
the next attack when his snap shot went narrowly over the bar and then Chris
Whitworth rose to send a crashing header against the bar. It was constant Wantage
pressure and the home side found it difficult against the quick feet of Larman,
Jones, Belcher and Shane McGowran as they began to concede a string of free kicks.
Tyler delivered one such free kick into the danger area and Alex Lynch arrived
at the far post and dived in to head the second goal. Within a minute another
free kick was conceded in the same area, Tyler delivered another ball which this
time Gavin Jones glanced a header past Jacobs for No3. Wantage were rampant and
to complete an amazing 5 minute spell, Larman nipped onto a cross, took the ball
on his chest and then fired the ball into the net. Larman almost completed his
hat trick when Belcher closed down a clearance and Larman rolled the ball past
the keeper but the ball rolled narrowly wide before he could reach it. Hook Norton
did manage one opportunity at the end of the half but the ball was vollied over
the bar.
Wantage knew they had to contain the home side with the wind at their
backs in the second half. Hooky began to pass the ball around but
Wantage shut them down
well, high up the pitch. McGowran and Tom Austin tucked in to compress the midfield
and Broad, lynch and Whitworth stepped up to allow Huw Evans to control his own
defence. Wantage looked dangerous on the break with Belcher and Larman making
intelligent runs across the front line. When Belcher picked the ball up on the
halfway line and began to run at the home defence he appeared to be too far out
to shoot but the ball sat up and he unleashed a left foot shot which screamed
past the keeper and under the crossbar. Wantage then set about keeping the ball
and preventing the home side from getting back into the game. When the ball was
pushed beyond the back three Evans made two good saves at forwards feet. With
20 minutes remaining Simon Hicks and Mark Rawlins replaced Larman and Austin,
both had taken knocks to their ankles. With 15 minutes remaining Hook Norton
scored a consolation goal when a through ball disected the Town defence and Evans
was left stranded as Kelly made it 5 – 1. Wantage continued to play well
and took the sting out of the home side who began to make some rash challenges
which resulted in referee Mr Harper flashing a couple of yellow cards to calm
things down.
This was a good team performance.
The forwards looked lively and caused the home side problems.
Young Sam Belchers touch was excellent and his link up play
with the more experienced Larman was good. The three at the
back were strong and organised whilst the young midfield battled
well. Tom North and Ross Tyler provided the strength, Shane
McGowran, Gavin Jones and Tom Austin the skilful footwork.
Simon Hicks and Mark Rawlins came on and played their part.

BINFIELD RES 3
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 1
Wantage Town Reserves travelled
to Binfield with great expectations of extending their cup run. The pitch was
in a good condition considering the amount of overnight rain.
Wantage began well kicking up the slope, keeping possession with crisp passing
across the pitch, with Ross Tyler instrumental in the probing of the home defence.
It was Tyler who went close in the early stages with a long range effort which
landed on the roof of the net. Although playing well, using both Sam Belcher
and Tom Austin in wide areas to get behind the Binfield defence, Wantage failed
to create any goal scoring opportunities. Alex Lynch went closest when his looping
header was parried up onto the bar and then pushed to safety at the second attempt
by Hambleton in the Binfield goal.
The second half was a complete turn around. After only 4 minutes
a Wantage attack broke down and a long ball out of defence
seemed to be covered by Stuart Morrison
and Huw Evans. As the defender approached the keeper, allowing the ball to
run, Binfield’s Hotson nipped between them, pushing the ball wide of Evans and
rolling the ball into the empty net. Before Town could settle it was 2-0, a free
kick was conceded on the halfway line and the ball hoisted into the penalty area.
Lynch headed the ball out but the clearance was volleyed back past Evans into
the net. Wantage made changes, Tom North and Chris Whitworth replaced Austin
and Edmunds, as they attempted to claw their way back into the match. With 15
minutes remaining Tyler was brought down on the edge of the Binfield penalty
area, he picked himself up and took the kick. The ball curled around the defensive
wall and beyond Hambleton’s outstretched arm into the net off the underside
of the crossbar.
Wantage pushed on searching for an equaliser as Binfield sat back. Town were
taking risks at the back and when Lynch was caught out Binfield broke away and
scored the decisive goal. Wantage managed one final shot from McGowran but the
ball cleared the crossbar.
After dominating the first 45 minutes, Wantage couldn’t muster a decent
shot on target and things must improve. The second half performance was poor,
allowing Binfield to control the game, by them stopping Ross Tyler from playing.
All in all we got what we deserved, its goals that count not good football. 45
minutes of good football counted for nothing.

LETCOMBE RES 0
Wantage were at full strength to face their local rivals Letcombe,
apart from injured captain, John Srawley. They were determined to grab all
three points
after the 1 – 1 draw at Letcombe last month. Adie Tinsley and Ross Tyler
were included in midfield whilst Tom Larman continued his return to match fitness
leading the attack.
Wantage began well, although the visitors had a couple of half chances, the Town
side looked comfortable. The back line of Mark Rawlins, Stuart Morrison, Alex
Lynch and Shane McGowran used the ball well, playing across the pitch and playing
through the midfield.
Sam Belcher and Tinsley provided the width with Tyler and Tom Srawley in the
centre. Simon Hicks and Larman were keeping the defenders on their toes.
Wantage were well on top and in the 18th minute McGowran
played the ball up to Hicks who flicked the ball on to Larman.
Larman turned and crossed the ball to
the far edge of the penalty area where Srawley strode in and half volleyed
the ball across Peters, the visiting keeper into the net.
Although Wantage had most
of the possession Peters was not troubled until the stroke of half time. Tinsley
picked the ball up wide on the right and cut in along the 18 yard line beating
defenders as he went, then he clipped a left foot shot beyond the diving keeper
to make it 2 – 0.
At half time Tom North replaced Belcher and still the home side dominated without
the killer touch in the final third of the pitch. The swift passing moves were
missing. Tom Austin and Alex Edmunds replaced Srawley and Hicks as Wantage searched
for further goals whilst Huw Evans had become a virtual spectator. It was Letcombe
who almost scored when Oran was left unmarked in the area but his header came
back off the crossbar.
This was a much better performance. The passing and moving was good, the team
played well together, the only thing lacking was the finishing. If we can keep
clean sheets we will not lose matches, If we can keep possession the opposition
cannot score. Letcombe battled well but Wantage did a good job on the day.
Team: H Evans, M Rawlins, S McGowran, S Morrison, A
Lynch, R Tyler, A Tinsley, S Hicks, T Larman, T Srawley, S
Belcher.
Subs: T North, T Austin, A Edmunds.

ARDLEY UTD 0
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 1
Wantage Town Reserves were up against Ardley Utd Reserves in a tough
away fixture knowing a defeat would close the gap between themselves and the
chasing pack. The late promotion of Ross Tyler to the First team squad meant
a reshuffle and the inclusion of Chris Whitworth on the bench.
Wantage kicked down the slope in the first half and with a
4-4-2 formation Shane McGowran slotted in at left back to give
the side shape which had been missing
in recent weeks. Wantage looked in control and on 8 minutes a free kick by Stuart
Morrison went narrowly over the bar as the Town mounted a series of attacks.
Wantage were forced to make an early change on 20 minutes, when Morrison decided
he could not shake off a knock from the previous week, Tom Austin was a straight
swap without weakening the side. Ardley nearly caught Town out when John Srawley
misjudged a high ball and Huw Evans was called upon to save his skippers blushes.
McGowran and Sam Belcher were linking up well on the left and Tom Larman and
Simon Hicks played well together. After Larman had headed over, Wantage took
the lead when his strike partner, Hicks, shut down a defender and the ball bounced
kindly to Larman who lifted the ball over Clutterbuck, the home goalkeeper, into
the net. Still Wantage controlled the game with Tom North and Tom Srawley working
extremely hard in the centre of midfield.
The second half was a different story with Ardley pushing forward
down the slope. Mark Rawlins, Alex Lynch, John Srawley and
McGowran still looked to pass the
ball out of defence, keeping possession was the name of the game.
Wantage looked dangerous on the break with Austin and Belcher
keeping good width, allowing Hicks and Larman to strike through
the centre. On the hour Wantage should
have increased their lead when from a corner Tom Srawley took on a header when
Lynch was well placed to score and the chance was gone. Alex Edmunds replaced
the hard working Hicks and then Whitworth replaced Belcher who collapsed in agony
at the side of the pitch. Wantage escaped a goalmouth scramble when North and
then Evans missed the ball, Lynch blocked a goal bound shot, Evans beat away
the follow up and then McGowran cleared the danger. Larman had an opportunity
to seal the match when set up by Edmunds but Clutterbuck made a brave save with
his feet as the striker closed in on goal.
Wantage deserved this victory with some neat passing football
throughout the side. Hicks and Larman were a constant threat
to the home defence and the wide
players, Austin and Belcher kept their defence spread across the pitch. Apart
from one moment of madness the defence looked comfortable, Rawlins and McGowran
gave width at the back allowing Evans to distribute the ball better and youngsters
Tom North and Tom Srawley fought hard in the centre of the field. This was a
satisfying result and a much improved performance on previous weeks.
Team: H Evans, M Rawlins, S McGowran,
J Srawley, A Lynch, S Morrison, T North, S Hicks, T Larman, T Srawley, S Belcher,

WANTAGE TOWN RES 0
v
BICESTER TOWN RES 0
Wantage were out to avenge their
only league defeat of the season with the visit of Bicester Town. The pitch was
in excellent condition but it was a bright bitterly cold day.
Wantage started well and moved the ball around well. The presence of Mark Stevens,
at the heart of the defence and Tom Larman leading the forward line gave the
youngsters an added confidence. As early as the 8th minute Sam Belcher fed in
Larman, he took the ball away from Lynham, the Bicester keeper and chipped the
ball to the far post. Simon Hicks had taken up an excellent position but some
how managed to head wide of the gaping empty net. The team continued to pass
the ball around well and Tom Srawley released Hicks but on this occasion his
first touch was poor and the chance was gone. Bicester showed some resolve and
on 17 minutes Huw Evans was called upon to touch over a long range effort. Wantage
looked to have earned a penalty when Belcher drove the ball past Lynham and the
ball was blocked on the line by a defender with the use of an arm, but referee
Mr Pardoe waved away the claim.
The second half saw Wantage push forward but the final ball was missing. Stuart
Morrison battled well in the centre of midfield but Tom North was trying too
hard to get involved and Tom Austin and Larman were having a quiet day. Tom Srawley
was played in by Hicks but his chip was well saved by the visiting keeper. Alex
Edmunds, Mark Rawlins and Shane McGowran replaced Hicks, North and Austin and
it was McGowran that managed the only other strike on goal with a low shot which
was gathered at the second attempt. Bicester never threatened the home goal with
Stevens, Lynch and John Srawley playing well, it was just the final ball that
was letting the team down.
This was a poor performance against a lowly Bicester side. With the number of
chances created the Managers would have expected more on target. The game should
have been won in the first 30 minutes. Now the gap at the top of the table is
shrinking with a difficult programme of away fixtures to come in the next few
weeks. We must go back to basics and return to playing better simple football.
Team: H Evans, M Stevens, S Morrison,
J Srawley, A Lynch, T North, T Austin, S Hicks, T Srawley, S Belcher, T Larman.
Subs: S McGowran. A Edmunds, M Rawlins.

THE
NEWBURY GREYSTONE CUP - Round Two
18th February 2004
HUNGERFORD TOWN RES 3
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 0
Wantage Town Reserves were drawn away to Hungerford Town Reserves in
the second round of the Newbury Greystone Cup. This was an opportunity to test
themselves against a team from the Suburban League.
Hungerford began well, kicking down the slope, keeping Wantage penned in, unable
to make any headway into the home defence. The home side looked stronger and
were obviously looking for an early breakthrough. Wantage defended doggedly and
Lynch headed against his own crossbar as they battled to keep the home side out.
After surviving the first twenty minutes they began to keep the ball for longer
spells and Hicks and Belcher managed to hold the ball up in the Hungerford half.
When Hungerford did breach the Wantage defence Huw Evans was on top form. He
saved bravely at the centre forwards feet when he was clean through and then
he made a fine double save with both his feet and then his hands. Evans handling
under the bar was excellent as the home side sent dangerous crosses across the
Wantage goal.
Wantage held out for a battling 0-0 scoreline at half time knowing they had the
slope in their favour in the second 45 minutes.
Wantage began the second half as Hungerford had started the first. An early
free kick saw Tom North’s shot deflected wide and from the resulting
corner North headed narrowly over. Tom Srawley robbed a midfield opponent
and delivered
a telling ball to the far post where Hicks failed to beat a defender to add
a scoring touch. Hungerford hit back and Evans was again called upon to save
Wantage
with another double save, turning a drive around the post. It was end to
end stuff, Austin curled a free kick over the bar and then on the hour the
home
side broke the deadlock. Some neat interplay on the half way line saw the
forward run clear and hit a low drive which Evans got his hand to but the
ball still
found the net. Wantage still tried to play football but the home side were
a
formidable force and when North floated a ball over the defence Lynch moved
in unchallenged but his header was well wide of the mark. Wantage introduced
Edmunds,
Whitworth and Wise in an attempt to unsettle the home side but they were
too strong and organised to give the game up. Hungerford scored two more
goals
in the final 15 minutes to win the tie.
This was not a bad performance against a strong, experienced and well organised
team. After their previous game, Wantage began to create chances again. Huw Evans
was in great form and his saves kept the side in the match for the first hour.
The defence looked vulnerable at times but they were up against a lively forward
line who were well supported by their midfielders. The Wantage midfield were
out played but they kept battling to the final whistle and Hicks had one of his
better games leading the forward line supported by Belcher.
Team: H Evans, M Rawlins, S Morrison, J Srawley , A Lynch,
T North, T Austin, S Hicks, S Belcher, T Srawley, S McGowran
Subs: A Edmunds, C Whitworth, M Wise.

LETCOMBE RES 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 1
Wantage Town Reserves were back in action after a four week break against
local rivals Letcombe. The pitch was in excellent condition with plenty of grass
for the time of the year.
Letcombe were quick out of the blocks and immediately put Wantage under pressure.
They were smart up front, moving well and pulling the Town defence around. Mark
Rawlins, John Srawley and Stuart Morrison were stretched and in the 4th minute
a cross from the left was not collected by Huw Evans. From the scramble Srawley
blocked a shot but the ball fell to Jelinski who fired Letcombe into the lead.
Wantage were not playing with any flow to their game. The short
passes were missing and the movement off the ball was poor.
Letcombe looked comfortable across the
pitch, winning everything in the air, their defenders were steady and their
forwards lively. It wasn’t until the 20th minute that Wantage
registered a shot on target through Shane McGowran.
Tom North was putting himself about and he earned Wantage an equaliser when he
burst from midfield and when he appeared to lose the ball he bravely used his
head to guide the ball on to Sam Belcher who found the back of the net. The goal
sparked the game to life, North went close with a well struck free kick as Wantage
began to push forward but Rawlins then made a superb last ditch tackle to deny
Letcombe a clear shot at goal. The half time score remained 1-1.
The second half saw both sides battle without either keeper being tested. Tom
Srawley went close with a shot and Wantage scrambled a couple of efforts out
of their penalty area. McGowran made a last ditch tackle to block a flowing Letcombe
move and survived a penalty claim into the bargain. Then the Letcombe linesman
incensed the Wantage players with some offside decisions.
Martin Wise replaced Hicks for the final 15 minutes but he could not change the
course of the game. The game fizzled out with neither side looking as if they
would score the decisive goal.
The four week break certainly effected the way Wantage played.
The forwards Simon Hicks and Sam Belcher were starved of service
whilst Tom Austin and Alex Edmunds
were not involved enough to influence the game. Huw Evans was not kicking
well and the defence looked uncomfortable at times. On the plus
side Stuart Morrison
had a steady return and worked well with John Srawley and Mark Rawlins. The
team didn’t play well but it was an away point and any
point away from home is a bonus.
Team: H Evans, M Rawlins, S Morrison, J Srawley, A Edmunds,
T North, T Austin, S Hicks, S Belcher, T Srawley, S McGowran.
Subs: M Wise, C Whitworth, P Wilkins.

WANTAGE TOWN RES 3
v
ALMONDSBURY TOWN RES 1
Wantage Town Reserves were ready for another tough clash with another
title contender Almondsbury, on a cold January afternoon with First teamer Paul
Day leading the front line with Simon Hicks.
The game began well for Wantage when in the opening minutes they were awarded
a free kick 25 yards from goal. Ross Tyler swung the ball into a crowded penalty
area and the ball eluded everyone and crept past Graham, the visiting keeper,
into the net. The game then evened out with Almondsbury looking strong when attacking
down their right wing but Sam Belcher was on his game, aiding the back line of
John Srawley, Mark Rawlins and Alex Lynch. Huw Evans was handling well and keeping
the defence in order. With half an hour gone and Almondsbury pushing on, a long
ball was played over their defence and Paul Day raced clear, held off the defender,
drew the keeper and shot high into the net to make it 2-0. Still Almondsbury
matched Wantage, both sides battling for every ball and on the stroke of half
time Wantage increased their advantage. Tom Srawley picked the ball up on the
right hand side of the visitors area, he weaved past several defenders before
rounding the keeper and calmly rolled the ball into the net.
The 3-0 score line flattered Wantage somewhat as Almondsbury were an experienced
side but the young Wantage players fought hard for every ball with Tom North,
Tom Srawley, Tom Austin and Ross Tyler all working together to win possession
but the ball was often wasted with slack passes. Evans was twice called upon
to make fine saves at the feet of oncoming defenders to keep Wantage in control
but with 20 minutes remaining the visitors pulled a goal back. Evans claimed
a high ball but on landing he collided with a forward and the ball broke free,
he saved the first shot but the rebound was dispatched into the Wantage net.
Wantage changed Hicks with Shane McGowran, Belcher moved up front and McGowran
to the left. The move almost worked immediately when Belcher chased a defender
down and the ball broke to Day who instantly stabbed the ball towards goal but
the ball rolled agonisingly wide of the far post. Almondsbury piled on the pressure
but Wantage stood firm, Alex Edmunds replaced Belcher, who had taken a knock
and the home side, played out the final minutes.
This was a good result although the performance was not as good as previous weeks.
The team fought hard for the result but made hard work of keeping it. We must
learn to keep the ball for longer periods making better use of possession. Whilst
we have the ball the opposition cannot score. Every game will be tough as everyone
wants to beat the league leaders.
Well done lads, hard work and passing football is terrific to watch.
Team:- H Evans, M Rawlins, S Belcher, J Srawley, A Lynch, T North, T
Austin, S Hicks, P Day, T Srawley, R Tyler.

ANAGRAM RECORDS RESERVE CHALLENGE CUP - 2nd Round
10th January 2004
CHELTENHAM SARACENS RES 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 1
(Wantage won 4-2 on penalties)
Wantage Town Reserves were drawn away to Cheltenham Saracens
reserves in the second round of the Reserve Team Cup. This was
an opportunity to test themselves against a team from Division
One of the reserve section.
Wantage began shakey, and
within the first few minutes Saracens had a shot which bounced
on the top of the bar. Wantage responded well pushing the home
side back with neat inter passing through midfield and balls over
the big defenders for Sam Belcher and Simon Hicks to run onto.
Cheltenham keeper, Power reacted well to tip over a Hicks shot
from close range then Belcher broke clear and hit a firm shot past
the keeper and wide of the goal. With Tom Austin and Shane McGowran
providing width across the field Wantage kept probing the home
defence and Alex Edmunds saw a shot on the turn go narrowly wide.
Saracens looked dangerous from set pieces and from a corner Huw
Evans went full stretch to divert the ball around the post, then
from the corner Austin was well positioned to clear the ball at
the foot of the post. Tom Srawley and Ross Tyler were working well
together with Edmunds controlling the centre of the park but Saracens
No7, Minnock was always looking dangerous.
Saracens started better in
the second half, John Srawley, Tom North and Mark Rawlins had to
be alert as they looked to impose themselves on the game. Both
sides looked dangerous but when Tyler lifted the ball over the
home defence after 12 minutes, Hicks ran on and slotted the ball
home to give Wantage the lead. Wantage were in control and McGowran
cut in from the left and again found Hicks in a good position but
this time he shot wide. Wantage created chance after chance but
a second goal would not come and Saracens began hitting long balls
out of defence. Edmunds pulled up with an injury and Paul Wilkins
replaced him. With 15 minutes remaining a long ball over the top
of the Wantage defence saw Dyer break free, his shot was well saved
by Evans but the rebound fell kindly and he scored at the second
attempt. Wantage raised their game once more but they could not
beat Power again.
Extra time was played out
without any further scoring although both sides had opportunities.
So the game was to be decided by penalties.
Wantage went first…
McGowran 1-0,
Saracens … 1-1,
Tyler 2-1,
Saracens.. saved by Evans 2-1,
Wilkins 3-1,
Saracens… 3-2,
North 4-2,
Saracens …. Wide 4-2.
Wantage win 4-2 on penalties.
This was a terrific
performance considering the squad of players available, with
only two recognised defenders. Everyone did their job and although
opportunities came and went no-one lost confidence, in fact
it spurred each player on to achieve the victory they deserved
with neat skilful attacking football.
Team:- H Evans, M Rawlins, S McGowran, J Srawley, R Tyler, T North, T Austin,
S Hicks, A Edmunds, S Belcher.
Subs:- P Wilkins.

BERKS & BUCKS INTERMEDIATE CUP - Round 4
3rd January 2004
WANTAGE TOWN RES 1
v
LETCOMBE 2
After being reinstated in the
Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup 4th Round, Wantage Town Reserves faced the
First team of local rivals Letcombe at Alfredian Park. On a heavy pitch both
sides contributed to an exciting game, full of passion where Wantage picked up
four cautions.
With both sides battling in midfield, first half chances were limited. Simon
Hicks went close, with a near post header from Sam Belchers corner, forcing a
fine save from Letcombe keeper Stuart Game. Then on the half hour, Letcombe opened
up the home defence and Nick Roberts placed his shot wide of Huw Evans in the
Town goal but Pete Broad stretched out a leg and somehow cleared the ball for
a corner.
The second half was still evenly balanced although Letcombe looked more menacing.
Wantage keeper, Evans was handling well, making a good save low down to his right
and he was well supported by Mark Rawlins, John Srawley, Alex Lynch and Broad.
The midfield battle between young skilful players from both sides was a credit
to the local talent in the area. Tom North, Tom Srawley, Tom Austin and Sam Belcher
matched their Division One counterparts.
The heavy pitch began to take its toll, Chris Kennedy and Shane McGowran replaced
Austin and Alex Edmunds, who had worked up front tirelessly. Kennedy headed over
from a corner and then with 15 minutes remaining McGowran broke the deadlock.
He received the ball 25 yards from goal and unleashed a drive which beat Game,
hit the underside of the bar and crossed the line before the keeper could recover.
Letcombe threw men forward, Mark Rees replaced Roberts as they searched for an
equaliser.
With 5 minutes remaining Evans punched a corner to the edge
of the box, Whatley controlled the ball and drove his shot
goalwards, the ball flicked off a defender
and went into the roof of the net. As the game went into injury time Letcombe’s
Mark Rees exchanged passes with David Rees and the substitute found himself clear
to shot past Evans for the winning goal. Letcombe were elated and Wantage in
despair as the final whistle blew within seconds of the restart.

HEADINGTON AMATURES RES 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 2
Wantage Town Reserves travelled to Headington Amateurs on a wet and very windy
afternoon with a small squad of players to play their last game of 2003. The
rain stopped as the teams warmed up but the wind continued to blow across the
heavy pitch.
Wantage knew they would have to keep the ball on the floor, playing to their
strengths, with quick footed midfield players. Headington dominated the opening
period, hitting long balls into the wind, their taller players winning the aerial
battles. Then Tom Srawley, Adie Tinsley and Tom North began shortening their
passes and Wantage started to show their quality. John Srawley and Alex Lynch
were marking well allowing mark Rawlins to cover the back line, reading the game
well. On 24 minutes Wantage took the lead. Tom Srawley skipped two tackles and
slipped the ball to Tinsley who side-stepped a challenge and shot low across
the home keeper, Russell. The ball struck the base of the post and Simon Hicks
followed up to score. Within a minute it was 2-0. Sam Belcher, playing in an
unfamiliar ring wing-back role received the ball from Tom Srawley, he cut inside
onto his left foot and shot, the ball deflected of a defender and beat Russell
on his right hand side. Headington pushed forward in numbers, attacking down
the left as the wind carried the ball beyond the defensive line and it was only
two excellent saves from Huw Evans in the Wantage goal which kept them ahead.
Wantage still passed the ball well winning a string of corners and from one corner
John Srawley layed the ball back to Tinsley who shot narrowly over the bar from
outside the penalty area. It was 2-0 at half-time.
Wantage started the second half at high tempo. Belcher played Hicks in behind
the home defence, his shot was well saved and Alex Edmund followed up but shot
narrowly wide of the goal. Then Lynch floated a free kick beyond the far post
and Shane McGowran volleyed over. The home side had to make changes; they introduced
two substitutes and pushed another man up front. Evans was on top form making
a string of fine saves to keep the score 2-0 but with 20 minutes to go Headington
scored through Dawson. A short corner was driven low into the six yard box where
Dawson flicked the ball into the net. Headington piled on the pressure but Wantage
looked dangerous on the break. McGowran went close again when Russell made a
fine save, turning his deflected shot around the post for a corner. Then Rawlins
made a superb tackle inside his own penalty area to prevent a clear goal scoring
opportunity and Wantage held on for another victory.
Wantage ground out another win against a battling well organised Headington side.
Although stretched to the limit the team did well, Huw Evans had an excellent
game and Adie Tinsley played well helping the youngsters through the match.
Team:-- H Evans, M Rawlins, A Lynch,
J Srawley, S Belcher, T North, A Tinsley, S Hicks, A Edmunds, T Srawley, S McGowran.

BERKS & BUCKS INTERMEDIATE CUP - Round 3
6th December 2003
SHRIVENHAM 5
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 0
Wantage Town reserves faced a
tough fixture in the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup at
Division One West side, Shrivenham, who were fielding their
new signing Nathan Holt.
The game didn’t start well for Wantage; within 5 minutes Chris Whitworth
received a crunching tackle and had to be replaced by Tom Srawley. Wantage
were passing the ball around well but on 16 minutes an attack broke down and
the home side broke out of defence, sweeping the ball out to Green on the right
wing. He advanced and hit a wicked right foot shot which beat Huw Evans and
dipped into the top corner of the goal. Wantage continued to play their own
game but Holt was proving to be a thorn in their side. After Alex Edmunds had
a long range effort well saved by West in the home goal, the ball was cleared
long, up the centre of the pitch. The ball was played wide to Green who squared
the ball across the area and Sutton nipped in to make it 2-0. Within a minute
it was 3-0; Shrivenham took full advantage of a mix up on the half way line,
broke down the left and crossed to the unmarked Green, who beat Evans from
close range.
Wantage changed things around at half time. Warren Greatrex moved into midfield
to man to man mark Holt, leaving John Srawley, Alex Lynch and Mark Rawlins
to play at the back. The game was much tighter with Shane McGowran and Tom
Austin keeping good width and Tom North and Tom Srawley holding the midfield
together. Both Simon Hicks and Edmunds were working hard up front with little
to show for it. On the hour Sam Belcher replaced Tom Srawley who was suffering
from two dead legs, from separate challenges. With just 15 minutes remaining
Shrivenham substitute Winchcombe found space on the edge of the area to make
it 4-0. The Town players were feeling the pace and Rawlins was replaced by
Jon James after cramp set in. In the final minute Winchcombe squeezed home
his 2nd and Shrivenham’s 5th.
Although the score line was 5-0
the young Wantage side had acquitted themselves well. Evans
was blameless with all the goals and after conceding two goals
late in the first half the whole team reacted well in the second
half. The Division One side were too strong and more clinical
in their approach play but although they scored the goals the
amount of possession enjoyed by both sides was much closer.

WANTAGE TOWN RES 3
v
HEADINGTON AMATURES RES 2
Wantage Town faced bottom of the table Headington Amateurs at home on a cold
afternoon, with Adam Pilling and Adie Tinsley bolstering the midfield.
The game was very tight with both defences on top with few
chances being created. It wasn’t until the 28th minute, when Warren Greatrex crossed from the
left and Simon Hicks ran in to head wide from a promising position. It wasn’t
long before Wantage did take the lead although it was against the run of play.
Sam Belcher used his speed and strength to break down the left wing; he then
cut in and clipped the ball over the keeper and into the far corner of the
net. Headington were well organized, they kept four across and used the long
ball
up field to their forwards to great effect. When Tinsley played the ball through
the visitors defence, Alex Edmunds was clearly offside but he raised his arms,
taking no part in the action, and the referee waved play on. Hicks ran though
unchallenged and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0. Headington
kept playing their direct football and on the stroke of half time John Srawley
was turned on the edge of the box but the striker fired over the bar.
The second half started well for Wantage as they kept possession for long periods.
When Hicks and Tinsley traded passes a defender managed to break up the play
but in doing so he lashed the ball into his own net. Headington then changed
their tactics, being 3-0 down, it was make or break time. They moved another
man up front and pumped the ball up the middle. Pete Broad and John Srawley found
it difficult against the aerial threat. Then Greatrex, under pressure from a
forward, steered the ball past Huw Evans into his own goal. Wantage continued
to play passing football with Tom Austin doing well on the right wing but it
was Headington who were calling the shots. With 20 minutes left Headington scored
again. Braod appeared to be impeded when challenging for a high ball but no foul
was awarded and the loose ball was driven into the home net as the rest of the
team stood by. Tom Srawley and Tom North replaced Hicks and Edmunds as Wantage
tried to stem the flow of Headington pressure. North, Austin, Belcher and Srawley
knocked the ball around well and it was Tinsley who had the next chance to score
but a fine double close range save kept the visitors in the game. The last chance
of the match fell to the visitors but Evans was alert and raced from his line
forcing the forward to shoot wide and Wantage held on for the victory.
This was a poor performance compared with recent weeks, but all credit to Headington.
They kept battling even when 3-0 down they took the game to Wantage and were
unlucky to leave Alfredian Park with nothing.

BISLEY SPORTS RES 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 4
Wantage Town Reserves were drawn
away to Bisley Sports reserves in the first round of the Reserve
Team Cup. This was an opportunity to test themselves against
a team from the Eastern League.
Wantage began well, keeping possession and making the home side chase the ball
but there was no end result. Bisley were looking for the direct to goal but
Pete Broad and John Srawley were playing well together in the centre, with
Alex Lynch and Warren Greatrex in the full back roles. On 16 minutes Bisley
broke and Huw Evans had to divert a shot around the post. From the resulting
corner Greatrex was there to clear the ball off the line at the near post.
Wantage still pushed on, playing controlled football but the final touch was
lacking and all the possession counted for nothing. From another Bisley corner
Wantage managed to scramble the ball away for safety. Wantage still had clear
chances to break the deadlock but Simon Hicks, Mark Rawlins and Shane McGowran
all squandered openings.
The half time team talk demanded a more ruthless approach and Tom Austin replaced
Rawlins on the right. Wantage set about the home side in the opening minutes,
Lynch crossed and Chris Pettis volleyed over then Lynch crossed again and Alex
Edmunds shot narrowly wide. With pressure mounting, Wantage forced a corner
on the right. Austin crossed to the far side of the box, Edmunds volleyed goalwards
and Pettis diverted the ball past Pasley in the Bisley goal. Bisley struck
back and forced Evans to save low down to his left. Wantage were well on top
with Lynch and Greatrex providing good service to Austin and McGowran who were
troubling the home defence. Lynch crossed from the right and McGowran came
in from the left and drove the ball narrowly wide. Then on the hour Broad passed
to Greatrex, he fed McGowran who moved the ball on to Whitworth, who had moved
in behind the full back. Whitworth crossed the ball first time and Edmunds
ran in to send a header crashing into the roof of the net. At 2- 0 it was all
Wantage, Evans kicked a long ball through for Whitworth to run on and shoot
over, Hicks was through but shot tamely at the keeper, then Pettis had a header
tipped over from another dangerous Austin corner. Hicks then broke down the
right and crossed for Edmunds to head Wantage into a 3-0 lead. Sam Belcher
and Tom Srawley replaced Edmunds and Whitworth. Hicks broke clear again; this
time he hit a low drive into the bottom corner to make it 4-0. With the final
minute ticking away Wantage conceded a corner and a Bisley defender rose to
head past Evans to make the final score 4 – 1.
After a close first half Wantage dominated the second with a fine display of
attacking football. Austin added width on the right to complement McGowran
on the left, this allowed Lynch and Greatrex to provide good quality crosses
into the box. The finishing in the second half was sharper but with the number
of chances created the score should have been greater.
Team:- H Evans, A Lynch,
W Greatrex, J Srawley, P Broad, C Pettis, M Rawlins, S Hicks,
A Edmunds, C Whitworth, S McGowran.
Subs:- T Austin, T Srawley, S Belcher.

THE BERKS & BUCKS
INTERMEDIATE CUP Round 2
4th November 2003
ABINGDON UTD RES 2
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 4
Wantage Town Reserves were drawn
away to Suburban League outfit Abingdon Utd in the second round
of the Berks & Bucks
Intermediate Cup. With the inclusion of Pete Broad, Alex Lynch
and Chris Pettis,
Wantage were firlding a strong side.
Abingdon began well but Wantage struck first when a high ball
was smothered and Alex Edmunds pounced to fire the ball beyond
McBeth in the Abingdon goal. Wantage began to knock the ball
around, an interchange of passes saw Edmunds shoot past McBeth
but narrowly wide of the goal. From a corner Tom Srawley got
his head to the ball but his effort bounced wide. Abingdon looked
for the long ball out of defence and on 17 minutes a quick break
down the left wing and a quality cross beyond the far post was
headed firmly home past Huw Evans.
The pattern of the game remained with Wantage passing across
the park looking for the opportunity to break through the Abingdon
defence. On the half hour Abingdon failed to clear a Wantage
attack and when the ball fell in front of Simon Hicks he crashed
the ball into the Abingdon net. As the half went on Wantage looked
to increase their lead, Tom Srawley turned and hit a great shot
beyond McBeth only for the ball to bounce out, past the incoming
forwards to safety. As half time drew near Wantage were awarded
a free kick in a dangerous position. Pettis lined up the shot
and sent the ball towards the top corner, over the wall, only
to see the home keeper flick the ball up and over the bar.
Wantage started the second half at a rapid pace and within the
first 2 minutes they were 3-1 up. Greatrex crossed from the left
and although Srawley failed to bring the ball down for himself,
it ran to Edmunds who fired low into the net. Abingdon had nothing
to loose and pushed on, forcing wantage to defend deep in their
own half. Firstly Evans was extended fully when he managed to
tip a lob over the bar and from the resulting corner a header
was sent well over the bar. After with standing the pressure
Wantage broke out of defence, Pettis released T Srawley who lobbed
the ball over the advancing keeper, Edmunds reacted first and
beat a defender to the bouncing ball, helping it into the net
for his 3rd goal on the night and Wantages 4th. With his job
done Edmunds was replaced by Sam Belcher and youngsters Tom North
and Austin replaced Pettis and Rawlins. Wantage were forced to
defend but on every break they looked dangerous, Whitworth released
Austin who crossed into the box for Tom Srawley to head over.
With 5 minutes remaining Wantage failed to clear the ball to
safety and the ball was returned into the penalty area and prodded
into the net via a post.
Wantage were too strong for the young Abingdon side. Although
not at their best they still earned a good victory over their
local rivals.

WITNEY TOWN RES 1
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 3
Wantage Town Reserves were strengthened
by the inclusion of Pete Broad on his return from a long term
injury and Warren Greatrex after his bout of glandular fever.
The game began with Witney applying a good spell of pressure, forcing Huw Evans
in to action, stopping two fierce drives. Wantage could not get into the match,
in fact it was the 16th minute before Dwayne Quinn broke down the right wing
and cut the ball back for Chris Whitworth to shoot high over the bar. Wantage
began to impose themselves, Mark Rawlins was strong at the back, cutting out
any danger on the Witney left wing. After some good passing and moving Quinn
broke down the right again and he crossed to the far post for Simon Hicks to
head firmly home past Reading, the home keeper. A lapse in concentration at
the back allowed Sollis to break clear but Evans did enough, forcing the forward
to curl his shot narrowly wide of the goal. Wantage were now passing the ball
well. Shane McGowran, playing wide on the left was teasing the home defenders
with mazy runs. Quinn switched the play from right to left, along the back
line to Broad, he found Greatrex who measured his cross to perfection, finding
Hicks, who again sent a header into the net. Even then Witney hit back and
Coles should have done better, firing over from 3 yards out.
Wantage began the second half strongly. Tom North crossed for Quinn to shoot
wide but Witney hit back and Evans was forced to block well as a long ball
cleared the defenders. The play was switching from end to end, North hit a
rasping drive which Reading did well to hold, and then Evans in the Wantage
goal, made a full stretch save to tip the ball over. Tom Austin replaced North
and before Wantage could adjust their shape Sollis broke away and scored for
the home side. Witney pushed another forward on, and Wantage made a double
switch, Tom Srawley and Sam Belcher replacing Greatrex and Edmunds, to inject
some fresh blood into the team.
Wantage switched to a 3-4-1-2 formation and pegged Witney back. With Austin
wide on the right, Tom Srawley behind Hicks and Belcher, Witney found it hard
to clear their lines. From a goalmouth scramble, Belcher pounced to score Wantage’s
third goal. Wantage settled down to keeping the ball and played out the final
minutes without further threats.
This was a good solid team performance. Evans played well in goal and his confidence
spread throughout the side. The passing, once Wantage settled, was neat and
tidy and everyone wanted a piece of the action. McGowran was a threat to the
home side all afternoon. Hicks was back on form and the young substitutes offered
another option when they were introduced.
Team :-- H Evans, M Rawlins,
W Greatrex, J Srawley, P Broad, T North, D Quinn, S Hicks,
A Edmunds, C Whitworth, S McGowran.
Subs :-- T Austin, T Srawley, S Belcher.

WANTAGE TOWN RES 4
v
SUTTON COURTENAY RES 1
Wantage Town Reserves were drawn
at home to Sutton Courtenay in the Berks & Bucks Intermediate
Cup and with the First Team without a game Ross Tyler and Gary
Swann were drafted in to strengthen the squad.
Sutton Courtenay began well but Wantage soon took control, passing the ball
around, keeping possession but they could not break the deadlock. Alex Edmunds
twice had opportunities but twice shot straight at the keeper. Mark Rawlins,
Dwayne Quinn, John Srawley and Chris Pettis were comfortable at the back, with
Tyler and Swann working hard in the centre it allowed Tom Austin and Shane
McGowran to attack down the flanks. On the stroke of half time Austin was released
down the right and his cross found Chris Whitworth on the edge of the penalty
area. Whitworth controlled the cross and crashed the ball into the net to give
the home side a half time lead.
Wantage knew they only needed to keep playing the same possession football
to win the game but they could not be complacent. As the pressure mounted,
Swann lifted the ball over the defence and McGowran ran on to guide the ball
inside the post to make it 2-0. Wantage changed Quinn for Mark Sheldon as Sutton
changed to a three-man attack. Sutton then reduced the arrears with a long
range, well struck shot which left Huw Evans stranded as the ball hit the net.
Tom Srawley replaced Mark Rawlins as Wantage set about restoring their superiority,
with Tom Srawley joining the attack. Tom Austin crossed for Whitworth to head
home his second and Wantage’s third goal of the game as Wantage began
to expose Sutton’s defence as they still pushed forward. Tom North replaced
Alex Edmunds and his fresh legs enabled him to burst through the visiting defence,
into the penalty area and smash the ball in to the back of the net for goal
number four.
This was a good game for Wantage, they kept the ball well, mixed it when necessary
and won the game comfortably. For their part, Sutton Courtenay battled well
and kept going for the full 90 minutes, but in the end the home sides quality
shone through.
Team :-- H Evans, M Rawlins,
D Quinn, J Srawley, C Pettis, G Swann, T Austin, C Whitworth,
A Edmunds, R Tyler, S McGowran.

WANTAGE TOWN RES 3
v
ARDLEY UTD RES 2
Wantage Town Reserves were looking
to maintain their strong start to the season against Ardley
Utd Reserves. Included in the squad were Dwayne Quinn and Chris
Whitworth, both with first team experience and Shane McGowran
who was starting in place of the injured Sam Belcher.
Wantage started confidently, but the pass and move game almost caught them
out when an Ardley forward intercepted a pass and burst through, John Srawley
brought him down and was lucky to escape with only a yellow card. Both sides
were playing well and the visitors looked lively on the break but no-one could
have expected Mark Rawlins to handle a cross giving Ardley the opportunity
to take the lead from the penalty kick. Although Huw Evans got a hand to the
shot but the ball crept over the line behind the post. Wantage were unfazed
and continued to play neat, tidy football up to the half time whistle.
The second half started with Wantage on the attack, kicking towards the ClubHouse
End. Whitworth headed over, Tom Srawley wide, as the home side dominated. Then
against the run of play, Alex Edmunds lost possession and Ardley counter-attacked
down the left wing. A deep cross to the far post was met with a looping header
over Evans, which John Srawley could not quite clear as it crossed the line.
The Wantage players never dropped their heads, spurred on by Quinn, Tom North
and Tom Srawley in the centre of midfield, Tom Austin and Shane McGowran began
to turn the game.
Rawlins released Austin down the right wing and Whitworth headed his cross
firmly past Clutterbuck in the Ardley goal. Wantage piled on the pressure and
the Ardley defence was at full stretch to keep the home side out. From another
attack the ball was cleared as far as Quinn on the edge of the box, he took
the ball on his chest before hammering the ball into the net for the Wantage
equaliser. It was then a question of weather or not Wantage could break through
in the final five minutes. With time running out running out Tom Srawley slipped
the ball to McGowran on the left, he controlled the ball and crashed it passed
Clutterbuck into the net, to give Wantage the lead. Jon James replaced the
exhausted Whitworth and Wantage held on for a hard-earned victory.
This result showed how
the team is gelling together. After falling two goals behind
they showed remarkable character to turn things around by playing
controlled passing football.
Team:-- H Evans, M Rawlins,
D Quinn, J Srawley, M Sheldon, T North, T Austin, C Whitworth,
A Edmunds, T Srawley, S McGowran.
Subs:-- J James, J Stroud, P Wilkins.

WANTAGE TOWN RES 4
v
EASINGTON SPORTS RES 1
Wantage were forced to make several changes to the previous weeks
winning side due to injuries and illness but were boosted with
the capture of last seasons players’ player of the year
Tom Srawley.
The game began well for Wantage and with only 6 minutes on
the watch, Tom North sent in a low cross into the visitor’s
penalty area which looped off a defenders leg, over the keeper
into the net. This was just the start the young side needed to
settle them down. When Alex Edmunds was fouled 25yds from goal
the referee awarded a direct free kick.
With Chris Pettis injured, North put the ball down and hit a
fierce shot over the wall into the top corner of the goal. Wantage
could not maintain the pressure but still kept Easington at bay.
John Srawley and Mark Sheldon at the heart of the defence were
finding their feet with good support from Mark Rawlins and Chris
Kennedy in the wider positions. The youngsters in the midfield,
Tom Austin, Tom Srawley, Tom North and Sam Belcher were all passing
the ball about well ensuring Wantage remained on top. At the
end of the half Huw Evans picked up what the referee saw as a
back pass and Easington were awarded a free kick 15 yards from
goal. The kick was blocked by Austin, in the wall, then Evans
made a fine save and the rebound was hit wide of the goal.
Belcher was with drawn at half time through injury and was replaced
by Shane McGowran. The second half started with Easington pushing
forward, but when Rawlins knocked the ball up field to Simon
Hicks, he flicked the ball on to Edmunds who ran on and clipped
the ball over the advancing keeper to make it 3-0. Easington
changed their tactics moving another player into the forward
line and Evans made a fine double save to keep the lead intact.
McGowran was tormenting his marker and he set up Hicks who shot
well, producing a fine save from the visiting keeper, forcing
a corner. From Austin’s corner the ball eluded everyone
and north bundled the ball over the line for his second goal
of the match. Chances fell to both sides, Easington shot over
and both Tom Srawley and Hicks went close with headers. Jon James
replaced Hicks for the final 15 minutes as Wantage looked for
a fifth goal. In the final minute the Wantage defence was finally
beaten when a through ball was left by an offside forward and
as Wantage appealed a midfield player ran through to score.
This was a pleasing result, thoroughly deserved by playing attractive
attacking football. The midfield players were all under 18 years
of age and the oldest player was just 27. If the players continue
to play as a team, passing the ball, shutting down the opposition
and winning their own personal battles
on the field, they will continue to win more games than they
will lose. Team:-- H Evans, M Rawlins, C
Kennedy, J Srawley, M Sheldon, T North, T Austin, S Hicks, A
Edmunds, T Srawley, S Belcher.
Subs:-- S McGowran, J James.

WANTAGE TOWN RES 2
v
OLD WOODSTOCK TOWN RES 0
After last weeks disappointing performance in the 5-1 defeat
at Bicester Town, there were changes in the line up for the home
game against Old Woodstock Town reserves.
Paul Marchant was making his Wantage Town debut in goal, John
Srawley was back at the heart of the defence and Simon Hicks
returned to partner Alex Edmunds in attack.
The game was evenly matched with both sides fielding young players.
Wantage set out in a 4-4-2 formation which looked stronger than
the previous week, adding balance to the side and confidence
to the players. Srawley and Pettis kept Marchants goal safe with
some good cover and organised play. They were well supported
by Rawlins and Greatrex in the full back roles. Hicks and Edmunds
were working the front line well and this allowed belcher to
brake from deep on the left. It was Belcher who almost broke
the deadlock in the first half but the visiting keeper spread
himself well saving the shot with his legs.
In the second half Wantage continued to threaten the Woodstock
goal with neat passing football but the opening goal came from
a long kick from Marchant. His long ball bounced over the visitors
defence and Edmunds ran through and lobbed the ball over the
out coming keeper into the net. Wantage were on the offensive
and were soon 2-0 up when belcher headed on a clearance through
to Hicks to score his first goal of the season. Wantage were
well in command and this allowed the manager to introduce the
substitutes, for the later stages without the pressure on them
to turn things around. Kennedy replaced North, McGowran replaced
Edmunds and Sheldon replaced Rawlins. It was late in the game
when Marchant had to show his ability when he made two fine saves
to keep out the visiting forwards.
This was a very good performance; everyone showed a commitment
to the team from the forwards to the keeper. Everyone looked
out for each other and played as a team. This was just the tonic
after the previous week.
Team :-- Marchant, Rawlins, Greatrex,
Srawley, Pettis, Smith, Austin, North, Edmunds, Hicks, Belcher,
Subs… McGowran, Kennedy, Sheldon.

CHIPPING NORTON TOWN RES 0
v
WANTAGE TOWN RES 1
Wantage Town Reserves started
the season with an away trip to Chipping Norton Town. With
the First team playing in the FA Vase expectations were high
for both sides.
The game began well for Wantage, in the opening minute forwards, Alex Edmunds
and Sam Belcher combined well resulting with Belcher volleying the ball beyond
Barrett in the Chippy goal. It could have been 2-0 in the third minute when
the same two combined but this time Belchers shot went narrowly wide of the
post. The home side responded well, from a corner a shot went narrowly wide
then Wantage keeper, Karl Smith, was beaten but the ball hit the side netting.
Chris Pettis and Warren Greatrex worked well in the midfield with Shane McGowran
and Mark Rawlins providing the width across the pitch. With half time approaching,
Wantage survived a goal mouth scramble from a corner. The ball was blocked
by Smith and the ball ran along the line before being kicked to safety.
In the second half the home side were kicking down the slope, hitting long
balls over the Wantage defence. Wantage continued to play the better football,
on the hour Belcher was released down the right wing and crossed to Edmunds,
his shot hit the bar with the keeper well beaten but his follow up header was
too high, clearing the crossbar. Rawlins had a lng range chip catch Barrett
off his line but the ball went just wide and then Pettis found the net but
his effort was ruled out as Edmunds had fouled his marker in the build up play.
The Wantage defence of John Srawley, Mark Sheldon and Paul Wilkins stood firm
and when they were beaten Smith responded with two fine saves. Jon James replaced
Belcher for the final minutes as Wantage ran down the clock for a deserved
victory.
